About us

A sustainable future shaped by environmental professionalism

Operating under a Royal Charter, the Society for the Environment, supported by its Member Bodies, is the body responsible for championing and registering professionals with proven competence in their environmental work. We are the custodian of three professional registrations:

Working as a partnership with our Licensed Members, we ensure the quality, relevance and awareness of our registrations and enable our partners and registrants to work together. We are in a unique position, bringing together a range of disciplines and sectors to reflect the multi-disciplinary practice of environmental professionals.

Over 8,500 environmental professionals now hold one of our registrations, with new professionals continuing to join the community year on year. The Society has also recognised exceptional contributions of over 70 individuals as Honorary Fellows of the Society for the Environment (HonFSE).

Our mission

We define the standards for professional competence in environmental practice, ensuring key decisions are made by verified professionals. As a collective, we can tackle the environmental crises and create a sustainable future.

Our team

We are a small, but dynamic team working remotely to support, register and champion environmental professionals. The COVID-19 pandemic taught us many things, including that we can work effectively and efficiently as a virtual team. Not only does this improve work-life balance by removing a potentially lengthy daily commute to the office, but it also helps our climate commitments. This way of working goes beyond our HQ team to also be embedded into the ongoing work of our committees.
