REnvTech & CEnv Employer Champion | Anglian Water

Anglian Water – An Overview

Anglian Water is the largest geographical water company in England and Wales, employing 5,000 people directly and supplying water and water recycling services to more than six million customers in the East of England and Hartlepool.

The Anglian region stretches from the Humber estuary, north of Grimsby, to the Thames estuary, and from Buckinghamshire to Lowestoft on the east coast. The coastline is around 1,257 kilometres long and the 112,833 kilometres worth of pipes transport water and wastewater around the region – which, if laid end to end, would stretch to Australia and back, or a quarter of the way to the moon!

Operating in the driest region in the UK, receiving on average a third less rainfall than the rest of England, combined with a high-proportion of flat and low-lying areas, a quarter of which lies below sea level, provides a significant amount of environmental challenges to contend with.

Anglian continue to invest in the environment, proposing a 30 per cent increase in the current environmental investment programme, allocating £783 million to environmental protection and enhancement in the next five-year period between 2020-2025, matching the scale of the challenge faced in the region.

Further to this, the company has issued it’s second Sterling Green Bond, available to finance selected investment programmes, as well as continuing its work to manage water resources wisely, improve water quality through the new wetland at Ingoldisthorpe in Norfolk and reducing single-use plastic pollution in the region. Anglian is also working collaboratively to prevent sewer blockages and pollution with ‘Keep It Clear’, introducing Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to aid surface water management, working with wildlife and biodiversity teams to protect and preserve natural habitats and much, much more.
