Chartered Environmentalist and former Society for the Environment President, Dr Tony Juniper CBE CEnv, has been awarded the prestigious 2023 CIEEM Medal.

Each year the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management’s Governing Board approves the award of the Institute’s highest honour, the CIEEM Medal. The CIEEM Medal is presented to a deserving recipient in recognition of their outstanding single or life-long contribution to the field of ecology and environmental management.

Tony is an environmental author, campaigner and leader. He currently holds the position of Chair of Natural England and has had a distinguished career including as an independent expert advisor and Executive Director positions with WWF-UK and Friends of the Earth. Extracted from his Natural England profile, Tony began his career as an ornithologist, working with Birdlife International. From 1990 he worked at Friends of the Earth, initially leading the campaign for tropical rainforests, and from 2003 to 2008 was the organisation’s Executive Director. From 2000 to 2008 he was Vice Chair of Friends of the Earth International.

Society for the Environment Board Member, Martin Baxter CEnv, reflects on Tony’s career to date:

“Tony has a passion for nature that runs through everything he does. His transition from a highly effective campaigner to working ‘in-the-system’ to ensure biodiversity and the natural environment are at the heart of decision-making is a reflection of his desire to catalyse positive change at scale. The award of the 2023 Prestigious CIEEM Medal to a fellow Chartered Environmentalist is hugely deserved.”

Tony achieved Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status in 2014 via his membership of CIEEM.
