For this blog we focus on a question that often gets raised: can you hold Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) alongside Chartered Scientist (CSci), or CEnv and Chartered Engineer (CEng)? Read on for more insight!

The value of Chartership
The importance of Chartership in demonstrating a professional’s expertise is widely recognised. Chartership is the ‘Gold Standard’, signifying that an individual has been judged by their peers to be working at the highest possible standard within their profession.
Chartership benefits the registered professional, as highlighted by those taking part in our #iamCEnv campaign last year. But beyond this, professional registration also benefits employers and the profession as a whole, demonstrating the individual’s skills, knowledge and experience to clients and the wider public.
It is for these reasons that we encourage all those who can to apply to become Chartered.
Can you hold CEnv alongside other Charterships?
Quite simply – yes! As long you meet the competences and requirements attached to each individual Chartership, you can hold CEnv simultaneously alongside other Charterships such as CEng and CSci.
The value of Chartership is such that having restrictions on holding multiple Charterships simultaneously wouldn’t make sense! Being a CEnv as well as CEng, to use just one example, showcases that a professional has wide-ranging skills, with expertise in engineering and environmental and sustainability matters.
The Benefits
Many professionals across sectors hold CEnv alongside other Charterships, and report benefits from doing so. Below is the view of Clare Rodgers FCIWEM C.WEM CEnv CSci, Operational Unit Manager (North East) at the Environment Agency, on her experience of being both a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and a Chartered Scientist (CSci). Clare holds her registrations via her membership of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), of which she is also a Fellow (FCIWEM) and a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager (C.WEM).

“Being both a CEnv and CSci means that I am able to simultaneously demonstrate my interest and expertise in sustainability, water management and the environmental sciences. Holding these Charterships, both widely recognised and respected qualifications, has also given me more opportunities to expand my knowledge, develop my skills and build relationships.
Being Chartered is increasingly cited as a requirement for applications and proposals and holding CEnv and CSci means that I cover more areas of expertise, opening up more opportunities.
My Charterships also give me access to the broad yet distinct networks made up of Chartered Environmentalists and Chartered Scientists, connecting me with professionals from across sectors and helping me to develop my CPD in different fields. I mentor likeminded professionals to follow in my footsteps by achieving CEnv and/ or CSci, which is a hugely enjoyable and rewarding experience.”
