I would absolutely recommend CEnv registration to my fellow RICS members. CEnv registration is for Chartered Surveyors from any specialism who work in environmentally related matters, not just for those who have gained their RICS membership through the Environmental Surveying Pathway, and can help you to demonstrate your specialist competencies to the benefit of your career prospects.

DIEM Ltd, Chartered Environmental Surveyor
David, a RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Fellow, started his journey as a surveyor and environmentalist by graduating from Sheffield Hallam University with a degree in the RICS accredited BSc (Hons) Mineral Estate Management in 1996. He views this course, allied with his ‘sandwich year’ working as a development surveyor with an opencast coal mining company, as hugely important milestones, setting him up well for a successful career.
After progressing his career in environmental management in the railway civil engineering industry he entered private practice, establishing his own firm DIEM Ltd in 2005. In 2011 David gained his Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) registration. He describes this as a logical step following his qualification as a MRICS Chartered Environmental Surveyor, achieving his MRICS via the Environmental Surveying Pathway and demonstrating his specialist skills, competencies and experience. Happily, David found the CEnv registration process to be quite straightforward, the competences aligning well with those required to become a Chartered Environmental Surveyor. The high degree of knowledge and competence required to attain CEnv registration also helped David demonstrate his credentials when successfully applying to achieve RICS Fellowship.
Since 2005, David has supported UK based clients across six continents with their operations, including support to attain ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 recognition as well as with boosting their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
In 2018 David achieved his career highlight, meeting Her Majesty The Queen while representing RICS’ environmental leadership at the Institution’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
Looking ahead, David seeks to further his client base, supporting his clients to attain ISO standards – including extending support offered with ISO 45001, ISO 9001 and more specialist management system standards such as ISO 41001 Facility Management. He also aims to expand his international reach, having recently begun publishing commercial training courses online.
One more thing:
I have found that CEnv is a great harmoniser of skills and competencies, with Chartered Environmentalists holding membership of 24 Professional bodies from a diverse spectrum of sectors. As I work across many different sectors myself, including construction, land and property management, real estate from minerals extraction and facilities management, this diversity is very appealing and reflective of the environmental profession.
