2019 Environmental Professional of the Year

The prestigious Environmental Professional of the Year award recognises the outstanding work of Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) registrants. The 2019 award was presented to the very deserving Jerome Baddley CEnv at our World Environment Day Awards and Lectures event at Kew Gardens.

The Award showcases the achievements of those striving to protect and enhance the environment on a daily basis and attracts a diverse range of outstanding nominations each year from across sectors and continents. It can be presented to CEnv and REnvTech registrants only, and submissions are accepted for both self-nominations and nominations for your peers, colleagues or those that inspire you.

On behalf of all those involved in the Society for the Environment, we would like to take this opportunity to offer our huge congratulations to all of the finalists, but to Jerome in particular for standing out as the overall winner for 2019.

Jerome Baddley CEnv
Head of Unit – the National Sustainable Development Unit for the NHS, Public Health and Social Care

Jerome has worked in the environmental sector for twenty years, leading on globally significant areas of work. He produced the very first NHS carbon reduction plans; supporting two trusts to cut their footprints by twenty-five per cent. In 2009 he produced the UK’s first city-wide energy and carbon strategy for Nottingham; resulting in Nottingham cutting its carbon footprint by fifty per cent. He also chairs the National Working Group for Low Carbon Inhalers, a group that includes National Directors, leaders and even a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Alongside this, he also co-chairs the National Task Group on low carbon anaesthetics, and cycles to every meeting; even managing to take his folding bike into Parliament when giving evidence to the Environmental Audit Committee.

Diana Pound CEnv
Director and Lead Dialogue Designer/Facilitator
Dialogue Matters

A CEnv and leading Consensus Building/Stakeholder Dialogue practitioner, Diana designs and facilitates negotiations which unblock situations and build real momentum for change. She set up Dialogue Matters in 2000 and so far has designed and facilitated over 100 dialogues and trained over 2000 people. Diana has trained and/or facilitated in 26 countries (UK, Europe, Caribbean, Central Asia, Middle East, Africa, India and South America), at different levels of governance, and on a breadth of environmental topics.

 

Professor Carolyn Roberts CEnv
Self Employed Environmental Consultant, and;
Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Keele University

Professor Carolyn Roberts has a history of supporting sustainable development, by linking scientific research, business and industry, university teaching and management, government, voluntary and charitable organisations and the general public. A fluent and effective communicator, she draws on her background as a water and environment specialist to broker innovative collaborations in and beyond the UK, addressing some of the world’s most wicked environmental problems. She continues to support innovation, sustainable business developments, a Bangladeshi university, aspiring CEnvs, professional bodies including Society for the Environment, and the Worshipful Company of Water Conservators’ charitable work.

Tanya Ferry CEnv
Environment Manager
Port of London Authority

Due to Tanya’s environmental concerns, the PLA now occupies a leadership position on the topic of air quality. “The decisions I have implemented put us ahead of the curve, enabling us to engage more effectively with government, locally and nationally on this topic. For example, I have been recently seconded to Department of Transport to advise on guidance for the English major ports to produce similar strategies.”

A Liverpool and Cambridge-educated tribologist who has focused on conducting research and development on the use of renewable sources of lubricants for use in demanding and hostile environments such as the machining and grinding of difficult-to-machine materials.

 

Kathryn Norgrove CEnv
Network Optimisation Specialist
Severn Trent Water

As the Chair of the local grassroots environmental community group ‘Sustainable Bridgnorth’, Co-ordinator of the ‘Prevent Pointless Plastic’ campaign and the Refill Local Champion, Kath is at the forefront of an initiative to reduce single-use plastic in the town of Bridgnorth on the banks of the River Severn in Shropshire. The campaign spearheaded by ‘Sustainable Bridgnorth’ and supported by the ‘Love Bridgnorth’ independent traders group comprises an alliance including businesses, local groups (school, church, WIs), residents and Bridgnorth Town Councillors aiming to reduce ‘pointless plastic’ within the town.

 

Professor Daniel Oerther CEnv
Professor of Environmental Health Engineering
Missouri University of Science and Technology

As a science diplomat of the United States Department of State (USDoS), a sustainability consultant to the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF), and a professor of environmental engineering and science at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (S&T), Dr. Daniel B. Oerther, CEnv, conceived, secured five million dollars of development funding, and delivered the first-ever sovereign parametric weather insurance product promoting climate-smart food security for disaster risk reduction and sustainable management of marine capture fisheries.

 

Jenni Reid CEnv

With over 16 years experience within the environmental sector, including 7 years within the Highways division Jenni has developed a professional career rooted within the fields of construction and development. Providing advice on best practice in accordance with current legislation and experienced in client liaison Jenni specialises in providing pragmatic, project appropriate advice. Jenni is passionate about designing strategic and project mitigation and enhancements that support green infrastructure and future health and wellbeing and is a champion for interdisciplinary collaboration in her work.

 

Joanna Wright CEnv
Director of Environmental Planning
LUC

In over 25 years at LUC, Joanna has been at the forefront of delivering EIA, environmental, and planning advice across a range of high profile and complex projects, including Clyde Windfarm (Europe’s largest onshore windfarm at the time of consent), the South-West Scotland Renewables Connection Project (overhead lines, underground cables, and substation developments to connect seven windfarms to the electricity network), and Heathrow Terminal 5.
