Climate Action: Tackling the Climate and Environmental Emergency

SocEnv has acted swiftly and thoughtfully to the Climate and Ecological Emergency. Environmental professionals have been warning of the environmental dangers before us for years and have worked tirelessly to find solutions to the challenges we face. The urgency of the situation and growing concerns among the population has led to increased climate action, most notably via the climate strikes.

This enthusiasm needs to be harnessed and we must ensure that those with expertise can act to tackle environmental challenges and encourage others to act. Here at SocEnv we are committed to providing the space and platform for registered environmental professionals to take a leading role in climate action - via initiatives, our governance structure and more. More information on our work can be found below.

SocEnv is proud to be among the leaders of a new initiative ‘Pledge to Net Zero’. The pledge gives industry organisations and private businesses the platform to lead the way and commit to achieving science-based targets to meet UK’s 2050 net zero target.

Pledge to Net Zero is the first industry commitment in the UK requiring science-based targets from its signatories to tackle carbon emissions within their organisations. The pledge aims to support the UK’s net zero greenhouse gas targets in line with the Paris Climate Agreement 2015, which set a global goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

The initiative is led by SocEnv alongside the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE)the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC), together with leading environmental consultancies WSP and AECOM, seeks to make the environmental services sector a leader for taking action on climate change.

As part of the pledge, signatories agree to fulfil the following:

1. Set and commit to deliver a greenhouse gas target in line with either a 1.5°C or well below 2°C climate change scenario – covering buildings and travel as a minimum.

2. Publicly report greenhouse gas emissions and progress against this target each year.

3. Publish one piece of research or thought-leadership piece each year on practical steps to deliver a net zero greenhouse gas economy. Alternatively, signatories may choose to provide mentoring and support for smaller signatory companies in setting targets, reporting and meeting the requirements of the pledge.

Our newly established Advisory Council recently held its first meeting – a Committee created to provide advice to the SocEnv’s Board and made up of our CEnv and REnvTech registrants, Honorary Fellows, Licensed Members and the wider environmental professional community.

The meeting was praised by delegates for providing a fantastic platform to debate the environmental profession’s response to the Climate and Environmental Emergency, with insight provided from different sectors including the built environment, consultancy and Professional Body perspectives.

To ensure SocEnv continues to provide a space for debate and good practice sharing, we will look to hold another Advisory Council event in the Spring of 2020 - so watch this space!

We have also developed a dedicated Board Sub-Committee on 'Climate'.
