CEnv Profile for Oliver Milliner CEnv Head of Sustainability FX Plus

Oliver Milliner CEnv’s career background

After completing a BSc(Hons) in Environmental Science at the University of Exeter in 2011, I decided to migrate to New Zealand to kickstart my career. I worked for a niche sustainability consultancy specializing in GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) as a project manager for three years. Key highlights were supporting GRI and strategy workshop sessions with various types of companies and working with regional and national councils on sustainability projects.

After three years as a consultant, I took on a sustainability lead role for KMD Brands Limited based in Christchurch, New Zealand. This was an extremely high input and high reward role. Some key highlights for me there were project managing five company annual sustainability reports, introducing and managing their B-Corp certification, managing the company sustainability strategy, managing the carbon certification and CDP reporting, waste management strategy and filtering all of this through brand communications.

I now work for Falmouth Exeter Plus (FX Plus) based in Cornwall, UK. FX Plus is the estates and facilities service for Falmouth University and the University of Exeter. As the Head of Sustainability, my focus is on strategically embedding sustainability and net-zero strategies across all directorates. There is a strong focus on decarbonization, but also addressing wider environmental, social and economic factors.

I decided to gain my chartered environmental qualification as I was looking for a way to be recognised my industry experience. After realising a busy schedule was not able to accommodate undertaking a Masters degree, being recognised by a professional body was the perfect next step for my career. After achieving the chartered qualification, it’s been such a positive milestone for me as my colleagues at work recognise the standard I am operating at as well as the professional connections you can create outside the organisation.

Oliver’s tips for prospective Chartered Environmentalists

“Set personal career objectives and what the key areas you want to get really good at are. I say this because sustainability is so broad, its easy to get slightly overwhelmed by all the moving parts.

I also recommend adding strategic management and skillsets under your resume, this is because sustainability is a rapidly evolving and relatively new concept for businesses. Operating strategically is fundamental to ensuring projects are properly adopted and delivered.”
