The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) are pleased to set out our Strategy to 2045 – including our refreshed vision, mission, values and strategic pillars Recognition, Influence and Growth.
For more than twenty years, SocEnv has championed trusted, multidisciplinary environmental professionalism, giving a collective voice to those working to protect and improve the environment.
This Strategy sets our direction to 2045. It builds on strong foundations, but it is also a response to the scale and urgency of the challenges ahead. Environmental risks are growing and in an age of misinformation the need for credible, evidence-based action has never been greater.
Serving as a beacon, this Strategy will guide us forward and provide clear long-term direction and vision. We recognise the need to balance this long-term vision with a commitment to agility, so we will be annually reviewing our progress and course correcting where necessary through our five-year Business Plans.
Our Royal Charter commits us to act in the public benefit. This Strategy explains how we will do that over the next two decades: by increasing recognition of environmental professional registration (Recognition), strengthening our influence with policymakers and regulators (Influence), and growing and diversifying the community of registered environmental professionals (Growth). In doing so, we will champion good science, support better decision-making, and help ensure action delivers benefits for the economy and society as well as the environment.
As part of the Strategy development, we have reviewed and updated our vision, mission and values, and these are stated below.

We can only deliver this ambition in partnership — with our registrants and Member Bodies, alongside employers. Together, we can strengthen the role of trusted environmental professionalism in shaping a sustainable future.
This is an exceptional and exciting opportunity for SocEnv, building on the fantastic foundations laid by staff and volunteers past and present who have worked tirelessly on its behalf, with notable mention to the efforts of the strategy development steering group led by Ian Barker HonFSE CEnv. It represents the beginning of an ambitious new phase for SocEnv and the environmental profession.
