What does it mean to be a finalist in the SocEnv Awards?

The SocEnv Awards are not to be missed in 2025 and in this blog we’ll explore what our past winners and finalists have to say about the recognition and what it’s done for them in their careers.

The SocEnv Awards are designed to recognise those outstanding individuals who have innovated, inspired, and have gone beyond what’s expected in their recent work to protect, preserve, or enhance the environment. The awards have been running for 13 years now, and we have recognised so many incredible environmental professionals who have achieved huge success in their careers.

There are two prestigious awards open for nominations now:

  • Environmental Professional of the Year
  • Rising Star

Both of these awards offer a chance to inspire the next generation, to recognise the skills of environmental professionals and to remind one another why we’re here, doing what we do and striving every day to make a difference for the environment. You have until Tuesday 15th April to submit your nomination.

Becoming a finalist and even going on to win an award has been described as more than just a title to achieve – it is recognition, credibility and a catalyst for new opportunities. But don’t just take our word for it, hear from our past finalists and winners about what the achievement meant to them.

Last year’s Environmental Professional of the Year award winner, Adrian Mill CEnv, Managing Director at ESS (Environmental and Social Sustainability) and CEO at Lion Rouge, explains:

I'm proud to tell anyone who'll listen that I have won the award - so people have a point of comparison, I liken it to a Chartered Accountant winning an award for Accountant of the Year, which I find helps people to understand how important it is. It already has resulted in me being invited to speak in more conferences, which by consequence helps to raise the profile of my companies as well as the environmental causes that I am passionate about.

We had a good chat with Adrian following his award win last year.

Luckily, we recorded it! You can watch Adrian’s video here.

2024 finalist in the Rising Star award, Tamsin Robbins-Hill CEnv explains that:

being a finalist has highlighted my achievements, dedication, and potential within the industry. It serves as a commendation of my skills and expertise from a respected society boosting not only my professional credibility but also my confidence.

2023’s Environmental Professional of the Year, Claire Wansbury CEnv, AtkinsRéalis Fellow and Technical Director Biodiversity said:

It was such an honour to win Environmental Professional of the Year 2023. I have been fortunate during my career, and particularly in my current role with AtkinsRéalis to work on some incredible initiatives and projects. It is easy to take what we do day to day for granted, but we can all make a real difference. For anyone considering applying or proposing a colleague in future for one of the awards, I would absolutely encourage you to do so. It is a simple process and allows us to celebrate the efforts and achievements of our profession.

Robbie Epsom CEnv was a finalist in our 2023 Awards for the Environmental Professional of the Year Award. He outlines what the recognition means to him:

Being an award finalist has been instrumental in maintaining my motivation to keep pushing forward in the challenging sustainability landscape. The external validation and recognition provided by the award reinforced the significance of the work I'm doing and gave me a renewed sense of purpose. In a sector as challenging as sustainability, it's crucial to acknowledge and celebrate individual efforts. This recognition has also served as a reminder that I'm not alone in this fight. It has connected me with a community of like-minded professionals who are also working towards a more sustainable future. By sharing our experiences and supporting one another, we can collectively overcome challenges and drive meaningful change.
