We are holding a free webinar on the 7 November to delve into this hierarchy and the equivalent hierarchy for development sites and explore how they can help guide good soil management. Book your place here.
In September 2025 SocEnv launched the SocEnv Soil Management Hierarchy in Rural Settings (alongside the Soil Management Hierarchy for Development Sites, accessible here). Both hierarchies have been developed by the Soils and Stones Project Executive, with input from wider project volunteers and SocEnv partners.
Offering frameworks to guide soil management within the two respective settings, the hierarchies seek to clearly identify actions from most to least desirable, based on the impact these actions have on soil health and resource efficiency.
The hierarchies follow on from guidance previously developed by the project, including “The Ten Principles of Good Soils and Stones Management”, and share the same aim of furthering the adoption of good soil management across disciplines.
