In March 2026, we submitted a response to the consultation on the regulatory framework for sludge applied to agriculture.
This response was shaped by volunteers to our Chartered Environmentalist led Soils and Stones project. In our response, we focused on the direct impact of sewage sludge on soil health and the degree to which the proposed reforms align with the project’s aims, including our Ten Principles of Good Soils and Stones Management.
We would wish to see natural capital benchmarking for soil quality using international standards, as well as a national soils policy through which all soil-based regulation can be harmonised.
From the SocEnv response
Our response is shaped by the three overarching aims of the SocEnv Soils & Stones project:
(Aim 1) advocate policies that value soils and stones.
(Aim 2) shape and share good practice for consistent approach.
(Aim 3) forge connections that would facilitate collaborative outcomes.
