In March 2026, we submitted a response to the National Planning Policy Framework: proposed reforms and other changes to the planning system.
This response was shaped by volunteers to our Chartered Environmentalist led Soils and Stones project. We focused on the questions most related to the project’s aims, in particular the degree to which the proposed reforms align with the Ten Principles of Good Soils and Stones Management.
A National Policy on soils should be developed to reflect the importance of soil health management and ensure development at all levels encourages safeguarding of soil resources and maximises biodiversity gains, improved soil health and effective water management, through good practice in soil management throughout the development process in both infrastructure and individual plot developments.

Our response is shaped by the three overarching aims of the SocEnv Soils & Stones project:
(Aim 1) advocate policies that value soils and stones.
(Aim 2) shape and share good practice for consistent approach.
(Aim 3) forge connections that would facilitate collaborative outcomes.
