REnvTech Profile | David Scott, Technician at RSK Geosciences

David Scott REnvTech | An REnvTech profile

David’s background

“I started my part-time Open University course in 2019. I hadn’t studied for a long time. I started with a STEM Access course. From there, I went on to study towards a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science (Environmental Management), which I’m halfway through at the time of writing.

My career path soon followed, and I got a role as a science technician in a school for a year, which enabled me to move from there to where I am now at RSK Geosciences.”

David’s current role

“My working day is quite varied and differs from day to day. I fluctuate between the warehouse and the office, ensuring that equipment is compliant and calibrated, soil sample storage and soil schedules are managed, samples are sent or taken to labs for testing, and stock of off-site consumables is up to date.

I also work on-site, which again offers variety each day and could involve gas or water monitoring, soak-away testing, hand pits, trial pits, soil sampling, site validations, surface reinstatement, and decommissioning of boreholes. I support engineers across all sites either for setup or demob where necessary.

Since site works can be intrusive within public green spaces we mitigate this. We ensure various control measures are in place when a rig is set up minimising any spillage and disturbance to the ground when vehicles are in operation.

More from David

What role do you think technicians play in protecting and enhancing the environment?

“To support a more circular approach, as technicians, we repair site equipment where possible. We work towards reducing waste and ensuring materials get recycled. We liase with clients and contractors to help reduce environmental damage on site.”

What part of your job do you find the most exciting?

  1. The CPD – Learning new skills in the classroom and practice what we have learned in the field.
  2. The Variety – I could be working for one week in central London and next week working in the field in the country.
  3. The people  – Meeting a diverse range of people across all networks and industries.

What made you become REnvTech?

“I wanted to develop my professional skill set further, and the REnvTech is a good starting point for the chartered CPD pathway. In addition, adding acknowledgment and recognition within the RSK group, my line manager, William Bailey, was very supportive and steered towards the right people to engage with.”

What are your 3 top tips for those applying for REnvTech?

  1. Stay focused and schedule time to work on your application.
  2. Look for support within your company, a mentor who has experienced the process before and can guide you on achieving REnvTech.
  3. Ensure you read everything and clearly understand what is being asked of you in your report.

What would you encourage others to aspire to become a REnvTech?

  1. To become a recognised professional and not just a technician.
  2. To develop your career with the support of CPD learning and other courses.

What are your future career goals?

“To continue my professional development. To achieve a Level 5 Diploma, HE in Environmental Science through the Open University. This will support my application for Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) via the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) – my next stepping stone towards becoming chartered professional (CEnv). In addition, I will be applying to join IEMA – the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.”

Profile correct as of September 2024.
