What does an average day look like in your career?
My project facing role is incredibly varied, making it difficult to define a typical day.
I oversee the delivery of a portfolio of over 90 fast paced projects spanning three years, necessitating frequent transitions between them as they progress simultaneously. In addition to carrying out civil engineering design development of some of these projects, I also provide leadership, training and support to the other engineers and technicians working on the projects as I maintain the overall responsibility of the delivery of these projects.
In parallel I support on other water projects both from a civil and environmental perspective. This has included environmental assessment of high-profile projects, working with their carbon, materials and innovation teams on their low carbon concrete initiatives, developing carbon design tools, carbon footprints and case studies.
Additionally, I provide advice on carbon and sustainability matters to clients and colleagues. These activities may pertain to the projects I’m directly involved with or other client initiatives.
I never know what a day will bring!
What are the top three key knowledge areas that are crucial to your role?
- Understanding risk and opportunities relating to design, H&S and the environment
- Understanding of design and construction practices
- Technical knowledge on materials, carbon, carbon reduction and carbon footprinting
What part of your job do you find the most exciting?
I thrive on solving complex problems creatively and finding technical and sustainable solutions. The most exciting part of my job is the constant variability, which brings new challenges and opportunities for innovation and collaboration. No two projects are the same, keeping my work dynamic and stimulating.

Chartered Environmentalists are equipped with the expertise to implement innovative solutions, reduce carbon footprints, and promote sustainable practices across industries and in our designs.
This designation demonstrates a commitment to protecting our planet for future generations.
