What does an average day look like in your career?
Every day offers a new chance to shape decisions that will influence places for generations. Whether I’m guiding multidisciplinary teams, reviewing a climate‑resilient design, or supporting a young engineer’s development, my focus remains the same: delivering excellence with integrity.
How did you get to where you are now?
My career now spans more than 27 years, but one defining moment came early on when I completed the CIRIA ISO 14001 full training course. It wasn’t just another accreditation — it set the direction for everything that followed. Soon after, I designed and implemented a full ISO 14001 environmental management system for a regional organisation, an experience that ignited my long‑term passion for sustainability, governance, and what is now recognised as modern ESG thinking.
That passion has shaped my work ever since. I have chaired ESG groups within the City of London, helping drive environmental and social responsibility across the capital. I have also led international sustainability campaigns, extending my influence far beyond the UK and contributing to global conversations on climate leadership and responsible development.
As part of my continued commitment to advancing sustainable practice, I completed a United Nations course to broaden my global perspective on environmental stewardship and deepen my understanding of international frameworks. On a more personal level, I even planted a tree as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy — a meaningful contribution to a national legacy of resilience and regeneration.
In addition, I serve as a member of the Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce for the City of London Corporation, working alongside their policy team to help shape the future of green skills, workforce capability, and sustainability-driven policy for the built environment. This role allows me to directly influence the strategic direction of the city’s sustainability agenda while ensuring the next generation of professionals is equipped for the transition to a low‑carbon future.
From hands‑on engineering to project leadership and senior management, my path has always been shaped by continuous learning, deep professional accreditation, and an unwavering commitment to driving positive, lasting change.
In what way does your role consider and protect the environment?
At Meinhardt, environmental protection is not an add‑on — it is fundamental to how we work. As part of my role, I help ensure sustainability is embedded in strategic decisions, technical delivery, and wider business direction.
Our approach includes:
- Low‑carbon and net‑zero design principles
- Whole‑life carbon modelling and lifecycle optimisation
- Climate resilience planning and future‑proofing
- Digital integration to support sustainable design choices
- Nature‑positive and circular‑economy strategies
These principles guide our flagship masterplans, transformational retrofits, and major infrastructure programmes across the UK and Ireland.
Crucially, our commitment to sustainability is strengthened by Meinhardt UK & Ireland’s membership in the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) — a step that formalises our alignment with the mission to create a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive built environment. This membership enhances our ability to collaborate, share knowledge, and accelerate practical solutions that benefit both communities and the planet.
The real excitement comes from influencing change at scale. Seeing ideas become reality — a team challenging convention, or a project delivering more environmental value than originally imagined — is what inspires me. That’s when the work truly matters.
What are the top three key knowledge areas that are crucial to your role?
- Strategic Environmental Leadership
Understanding policy, climate frameworks, and long‑term environmental risk allows me to make decisions aligned with global and national targets. - Technical Engineering and Systems Thinking
Deep technical insight ensures that sustainability strategies are robust, practical, and commercially viable. - Commercial Insight and Stakeholder Influence
True sustainability requires alignment — with clients, teams, communities, and supply chains.
How has your focus on environmental impacts changed over the course of your career?
Early in my career, environmental considerations were often viewed as constraints. Today, they’re the driving force behind innovation. My own perspective has evolved from compliance‑based thinking to a systems‑led, regenerative approach centred on long‑term value.
Whether reducing carbon, restoring biodiversity, enhancing social outcomes, or shaping ESG strategies, I now see environmental responsibility as both a professional and moral imperative.
What part of your job do you find the most exciting?
The real excitement comes from influencing change at scale. Seeing ideas become reality — a team challenging convention, or a project delivering more environmental value than originally imagined — is what inspires me. That’s when the work truly matters.
