Paul Vega BSc(Hons) CEnv FCIOB MAPM, Partner at Gotch Saunders and Surridge LLP (GSSllp), has worked in the construction industry for nearly 30 Years. He highlights sustainability and environmental matters as an integral part of his role and career to date.
Paul’s interest in the built environment prompted his decision to study for a BSc in Quantity Surveying at the University of Northampton, followed by a position as a regional main contractor as a buyer, where he held responsibility for the procurement of sub-contractors and materials.
Then, in 1998, Paul started to gain experience of another side of the construction industry – that of a consultant – as he joined GSSllp, firstly as an assistant quantity surveyor and working his way up to his current role as a Partner of the practice. He credits his background as both contractor and consultant with helping build a deep knowledge of the industry.
Paul also has an in-depth understanding of and passion for the environment, having been registered as a Chartered Environmentalist since 2007 through the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). Far from sustainability being an additional element of his job, he says it is integral – The drive for achieving Net Zero in construction and initiatives such as BREEAM, as powerful examples.
Paul considers that for the construction industry to grow and prosper it needs to attract bright new talent. To do this, it needs to promote itself as an industry that can provide a career that is diverse, interesting, exciting, and secure. Sometimes young people are not aware of the opportunities available to them within the industry and the variety of careers available, some of which could combine construction and the environment.
The importance of sustainable development is rightly being brought to the forefront of infrastructure and construction projects and contractors, consultants and clients will be reliant on attracting and retaining good quality individuals who specialise in sustainable construction methods who can advise them on the best solutions and new initiatives.
Why should CIOB members think about CEnv?
I would encourage other CIOB members to become CEnv as there is a demand for individuals who have the knowledge and experience with regards to then environment and sustainability within the construction industry. Becoming a Chartered Environmentalist is a demonstration of professionalism and dedication and showcases talents within this area.
