Joel has since gained further expertise in environmental land management by working with Scottish Natural Heritage as part of their rural surveying team. In this position he took a lead role in delivering a variety of projects aimed at promoting and enhancing the natural environment. Joel has worked closely with landowners to advise, negotiate and agree sustainable land management plans over some of Scotland’s most environmentally important sites. It was also during this time that he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor with RICS.

Joel is currently working in the private sector with Strutt and Parker. With a varied role that includes rural estate and business management, valuations and other professional work, he also advises landowning clients and businesses on all aspects of environmental land management and sustainability. Joel seeks to highlight the opportunities and mutual benefits that can arise from sustainable management of the environment and natural resources. His work can include preparing whole estate environment plans, undertaking natural capital assessments, peatland restoration projects, agri-environment scheme applications, environmental compliance, sustainable land use and resource management.

In 2018, Joel became a Chartered Environmentalist. He describes this decision as a ‘natural progression’, as it allowed him to demonstrate to his employers and clients his high level of experience and expertise in sustainable management of the natural environment, as well as a strong commitment to professional standards and ethics that ensures they are receiving the best possible advice.

Looking to the future, Joel is interested in using his skills and experience to work with landowners, businesses and investors to develop and implement alternative approaches to environmental funding, by harnessing the commercial need for sustainable natural resources to deliver investment in natural capital and environmental management.

Joel is passionate about making a difference via his role – and being a CEnv helps him to do that by placing him at the forefront of his profession.
