Joel Paterson MA (Hons) MRICS CEnv FAAV is a Rural Chartered Surveyor and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) via the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

As a Rural Chartered Surveyor, Joel understands the rural environment and the interrelationships that exist in terms of the land and the people who live and work there. It requires a varied skillset which applies across the natural environment, agriculture, rural estate management, valuation and sustainable land use.

Joel’s interest in rural business, land management and the natural environment led him to undertake a Master of Arts Degree in Rural Surveying at the University of Aberdeen.

Joel has since gained further expertise in environmental land management by working with Scottish Natural Heritage as part of their rural surveying team. In this position he took a lead role in delivering a variety of projects aimed at promoting and enhancing the natural environment. Joel has worked closely with landowners to advise, negotiate and agree sustainable land management plans over some of Scotland’s most environmentally important sites. It was also during this time that he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor with RICS.

Joel is currently working in the private sector with Bowlts Chartered Surveyors. With a varied role that includes rural estate and business management, valuations and other professional work, he also advises landowning clients and businesses on all aspects of environmental land management and sustainability. Joel seeks to highlight the opportunities and mutual benefits that can arise from sustainable management of the environment and natural resources. His work can include preparing whole estate environment plans, undertaking natural capital assessments, peatland restoration projects, agri-environment scheme applications, environmental compliance, sustainable land use and resource management.

In 2018, Joel became a Chartered Environmentalist. He describes this decision as a ‘natural progression’, as it allowed him to demonstrate to his employers and clients his high level of experience and expertise in sustainable management of the natural environment, as well as a strong commitment to professional standards and ethics that ensures they are receiving the best possible advice.

Looking to the future, Joel is interested in using his skills and experience to work with landowners, businesses and investors to develop and implement alternative approaches to environmental funding, by harnessing the commercial need for sustainable natural resources to deliver investment in natural capital and environmental management.

Joel is passionate about making a difference via his role – and being a CEnv helps him to do that by placing him at the forefront of his profession. The dedication inherent in Chartered Environmentalist registration aligns closely with his personal and professional values; committed as he is to offering advice and services to clients that can help them make transformational change toward more sustainable businesses, land use and a better environment.

Why should RICS members think about CEnv?

As land and property professionals, Chartered Surveyors work hand in hand with those who own and manage land. With the threat that climate change and biodiversity loss present, we have an opportunity to play an important role in delivering a transformational change to a more sustainable world through our work. CEnv status demonstrates a firm commitment to that and the Society for Environment also provides a great network of peer support and resources for continuing professional development.
