I completed my CEnv on the last day before I went off on maternity leave with my second child. I felt that this professional qualification would add to my credibility and maximise my career options on my return to work. As a Chartered Engineer in an environmental field, at that difficult moment in any Mum’s career, it felt right to get the recognition for the skills I had been working hard to develop in the Environment Agency and before that in the Steel Industry.

Innovate UK, Deputy Director, Faraday Battery Challenge
Chartered Environmentalist, Jacqui Murray, works for Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, working collaboratively with universities, research organisations, businesses, charities, and government to create the best possible ecosystem for research and innovation to thrive.
Her role focusses on delivering the UK Government’s game-changing £246 Million Faraday Battery Challenge. This space has already seen £500 Million of private investment, leading to over a thousand new jobs to mitigate climate change, tackle urban air pollution and build new clean energy opportunities and industries here in the UK.
For Jacqui, no two days are the same. Last month saw her:
- Discussing the future of electric cars with actor and EV advocate Robert Llewellyn (of Red Dwarf fame) at the Low Carbon Vehicle Event 2018
- Talking with Lego on how to encourage more STEM skills in the UK (Jacqui is a a keen STEM ambassador in her spare time)
- Welcoming International businesses to the Zero Emissions Vehicle summit in Birmingham and Millbrook to showcase how exciting the UK is for battery engineering and investment.
- And finally, launching a £25 Million competition for collaborative research and development projects for Electric Vehicle batteries! The challenge is to make the most of the growing batteries market, estimated to be worth £5 billion in the UK and £50 billion across Europe by 2025
In her current role, Jacqui knows the importance of designing in sustainability and the impact on future success for the electric vehicle and battery industry in the UK. Being recognised as a professional in this field has given her credibility to lead these critical discussions for the Faraday Battery Challenge.
Jacqui’s recommendation to potential Chartered Environmentalists is to get a mentor (or two) and to think laterally as well as trying to tick the boxes – “Not everyone has the same background and certainly not everyone has formal academic qualifications in environment that get Chartered.”
Looking forwards, Jacqui will continue to make a difference for the UK as an engineer for the Government by working on the ‘Road to Zero’ strategy, helping create a battery industry and market for Electric Vehicles here in the UK.
