CEnv Profile | David Stubbs CEnv, Independent Sustainability Expert

David Stubbs is an internationally recognised authority on sustainability in sport and global mega-events. He is best known for having led the award-winning sustainability programme of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, widely recognised as the most sustainable Games in modern times. Through his leadership as the Head of Sustainability for the London 2012 Organising Committee, his team pioneered many key processes, methods and standards that have become sustainability best practice in the event sector – such as the now widely used event sustainability management systems standard ISO 20121:2012.

Since 2012, he has worked as an independent sustainability expert with a continued focus on sports and major events. He is the principal sustainability advisor to the International Olympic Committee, working on evaluation of candidate cities, advising organising committees and providing strategic advice to the IOC itself. In recent years he has been working both solely and as part of specialist teams on the development and implementation of sustainability strategies across a wide range of sport organisations. These include Formula 1, the Lawn Tennis Association, England and Wales Cricket Board, Premier League and World Rugby. Beyond sport, David developed sustainability strategies for the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, The Economist Events Division, the International Association of Horticultural Producers and Smyle, a leading event agency.

David’s career started in conservation biology, initially through a three-year study of the population ecology of tortoises in southern France. This led onto the establishment of a major conservation programme, which continues to this day and has had a strong influence on French national conservation policies.

For several years he specialised in the environmental issues affecting the golf course industry and led the first efforts to “green” the Ryder Cup, in 1997.

He is a founder member and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), and in 2013 he received the CIEEM Medal (the institute’s highest award) and became the first CEnv of the Year.
