Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) is a professional registration recognising the competence, skills and commitment of professionals working to enhance or protect the environment.
Becoming a REnvP demonstrates that you have been judged by your peers to be working at a professional standard, consistently implementing, developing and advocating good environmental practices.
As with the Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) professional registers, the Society for the Environment licenses professional bodies to award REnvP to their members. The licensed professional bodies cover a wide range of sectors and disciplines, making REnvP available to consultants, engineers, scientists, environmental managers, biodiversity officers and more.
As part of your career aspirations, you may wish to use REnvP as a clear pathway to environmental Chartership. The REnvP and CEnv competences are directly linked, offering a progression route to your chartership goal. Whilst gaining the additional knowledge and experience required for CEnv, you can demonstrate your ambition with REnvP registration. Alternatively, REnvP can be the perfect fit for you and your career aims.
To become a REnvP via your [LM name] membership you need to first be a [level]member or above and meet a number of other requirements. Find out more [link].
A Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) applies environmental knowledge, understanding and skills to protect and enhance the environment in a sustainable way. They are committed to planning, implementing, evaluating and supporting good environmental practices in their work.
REnvP registrants are expected to have acquired a level of knowledge equivalent to a QCF level 5 qualification (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) and hold relevant working experience to meet the 12 REnvP competences [link].
Becoming a REnvP means you work at a professional standard and are committed to continued professional development (CPD). As part of your career goals, you may wish to use REnvP as a clear pathway to environmental Chartership. The REnvP and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) [link] competences are directly linked, offering a progression route to your goal. Whilst gaining the additional knowledge and experience required for CEnv, you can demonstrate your ambition with REnvP registration.
The skills associated with REnvP registrants include being able to effectively:
evaluate
advise
implement
collaborate
co-ordinate
present
motivate
resolve
work autonomously where appropriate.
REnvP registrants can work in a wide variety of roles, disciplines and sectors, and can live and work anywhere in the world. Job roles can include, but are by no means limited to:
Consultant
Biodiversity Officer
Environmental Consultant
Technical Advisor
Environmental Advisor
Environmental Scientist
Engineer
Environmental, Health and Safety Officer
Graduate Advisor
Water Quality Technical Advisor
EIA Officer
[Add / remove to suit your membership / audience]
As illustrated by these job roles, a REnvP can work in either a core environmental role or as an environmental specialist in a related role. For example, an environmental specialist could be a Chemical Engineer specialising in developing sustainable alternatives to plastic or a Town Planner with expertise in biodiversity net gain.
In addition, graduates of the level 6 Environmental Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship will be ideally placed to gain REnvP registration (level 5) due to the practical experience and relevant knowledge obtained. The Society for the Environment helped to develop and launch the apprenticeship in 2019, which is the very first degree apprenticeship for the environment sector – just one way of achieving REnvP registration.

Gaining environmental professional registration is a great way of demonstrating your competence. Registered environmental professionals often cite increased confidence and professional credibility as direct key benefits of their registration.
Martin Baxter CEnv, Board Member at the Society for the Environment, sets out the need for Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) registrants:
“Translating policy and regulation into real-world change is critical in making the transition to a sustainable future. Gaining REnvP status demonstrates an individual’s skills and capability in the field of environmental protection and improvement. REnvP registrants will play a key role in implementing transformative actions to tackle significant challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and air pollution.”
Stand out from the crowd
Becoming a REnvP demonstrates that you been judged by your peers to be working at a professional standard, implementing and championing good environmental practices. This high standard incorporates not only knowledge and awareness, but skills and application of knowledge in practice. This external verification sets you apart from others in your sector.
Using the post-nominal letters “REnvP” after your name provides a clear way for environmental professionals to signal this knowledge and expertise to employers, stakeholders, colleagues and clients.
Showcase your continuing professionalism
All REnvP registrants have committed to following a Code of Professional Conduct and the undertaking of continued professional development (CPD). These two commitments showcase to employers, stakeholders, decision makers and clients that you remain consistently at the standard they expect of a competent environmental practitioner. Registrants are highly trusted due to the external verification of their up to date abilities and continuous high level of professionalism.
Having confirmation of your broader professional skills, alongside your technical knowledge is key. This includes effective communication, strong leadership qualities, sound ethics and excellent team work.
Confidence and credibility
Registered environmental professionals (CEnv, REnvP and REnvTech) cite increased confidence and professional credibility as the biggest benefits of their registration (2021 registrant survey). REnvP is an achievement that verifies competence in the environmental aspects of your work and overall professionalism. The internal and external recognition that this provides is highly valuable.
Make a difference
As Martin states, environmental professionals with proven competence are needed more than ever before. As we face huge environmental challenges, including tackling the Climate and Environmental Emergencies and biodiversity loss, we need those with the expertise, skills and commitment to thrive in their work. Plus, having competent and dedicated people working in the environmental sector helps to enhance public trust, respect and buy-in.
Career progression
Through consultations conducted in 2020, employers frequently noted professional registrations as a step within their internal progression frameworks. For example, to become a Senior Consultant, you are expected to hold CEnv registration. REnvP is used by employers in a similar way and in many instances will be viewed as a signal of your intent to progress to Chartership in the coming months/years.
Gaining REnvP registration could result in more influence, securing that illusive promotion, being able to co-ordinate bigger projects, trust to sign off reports and an increased wage.
Chartership steppingstone
As part of your career goals, you may wish to use REnvP as a clear pathway to environmental Chartership. The competence requirements of REnvP and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) registration are directly linked, offering a progressionary route to your goal.
Whilst working towards the additional knowledge and experience required to achieve CEnv registration, you can demonstrate your ambition and commitment with REnvP registration – a route increasingly encouraged by employers.
Join the network
By becoming a REnvP, you can connect with over 7,500 other environmental professionals proven to be working at a professional high standard. In this network, you will find those working in similar roles and sectors as yourself as well as professionals working in very different fields, which is great for knowledge exchange, networking and collaboration.

[Detail]
Having Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) team members can benefit an employer in a variety of ways. A selection of examples are provided below.
Client trust and value
Your clients and stakeholders always want to ensure that those doing the job will do it properly, using the latest thinking, tools and innovations. Environmental professional registration – whether REnvTech, REnvP or CEnv – confirms that your staff work at a high standard in their discipline. They have signed a Code of Professional Conduct and undertake continued professional development (CPD) to stay up to date with the latest good practice.
With this externally proven and verified competence, the value of your teams increase. This is likely to allow you to warrant a higher rate for their services. It’ll be worth shouting about the high standards that your teams achieve.
Progression framework
REnvP can sit alongside your internal development frameworks, providing an externally verified level of competence for your team members specialising in environmental disciplines. Achieving REnvP registration demonstrates that the employee has met the standards to effectively operate as a practitioner level environmental professional. Incorporate CEnv as the next step in this progression framework to highlight an employee’s development from practitioner level environmental profession, to chartered level.
Stepping stone to chartership
The REnvP registration can absolutely be the best fit for some, with no intention of aiming for chartership (CEnv). However, for many, REnvP will be the start of a pathway to CEnv. This gives you the confidence that your team members are committed to their personal development, which in turn will support the growing ambition and expertise in your teams.
Your support on their journey to CEnv, proven by your championing of REnvP, will likely result in increased staff retention. Retention of team members who want to progress and demonstrate their capabilities.
Fully informed teams
A core part of REnvP registration is being up to date. Candidates highlight this in their initial applications, but must continue to learn about new trends, techniques, standards, policies and good practice through appropriate CPD each year. This results in your teams being at the cutting edge of what they do, creating a culture of innovation, progression and continuous learning across the organisation.
Rounded professionals
Not only will your team members be verified as highly competent in their specific discipline, they will also be judged on soft skills and related professional attributes in the REnvP registration process. Communication, presenting, the ability to motivate, collaborative working, problem solving and autonomous decisions are all attributes that REnvP registrants demonstrate. This gives you the reassurance that an REnvP can offer much more than, for example, a stand-alone degree.
Dr Emma Wilcox, Chief Executive at the Society for the Environment:
“The REnvP registration is the ideal way to verify that you have been recognised by your peers to meet a high standard of professionalism in your environmental work. It demonstrates your competence to implement good practice, make informed decisions and co-ordinate projects, all within a code of professional conduct. We need those with proven, up to date knowledge to tackle the climate and environmental emergencies of today – REnvP registrants will play a key role in successfully overcoming these challenges.”

Martin Baxter CEnv, Chief Policy Advisor at IEMA and Board Member at the Society for the Environment:
“Translating policy and regulation into real-world change is critical in making the transition to a sustainable future. Gaining Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) status demonstrates an individual’s skills and capability in the field of environmental protection and improvement. REnvP registrants will play a key role in implementing transformative actions to tackle significant challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and air pollution.”
