Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) is the professional title for environmental technicians. Registered Environmental Technicians come from a broad range of professions across industry, government, education and the public sector. They all have demonstrated they apply sustainable thinking through their working lives and a commitment to environmental best practice.
To gain their registration, individuals have been judged by their peers to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the environment and sustainable management together with their personal commitment to maintaining the required levels of professionalism and their own competence through continued professional development.
Registration sets REnvTechs apart from others working in their field. It establishes proven knowledge, experience and commitment to professional standards, and enhances career prospects.

Registration as a Registered Environmental Technician is open to any who demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment. Individuals generally develop these through a combination of education and work experience.
The required education entails a level of knowledge, understanding and skills equivalent to at least Level 3, with the equivalent level of knowledge determined by the Licensed Body. Typically, an applicant will have the equivalent of at least two years’ full-time relevant work-based practice although this need not be contiguous.
To be considered as relevant, work-based practice must have a direct and distinct environmental focus or context. This may comprise paid employment, voluntary activity, academic work placements or research, but may not include pure educational study.
Experience that develops general professional competences, such as communication and presentation skills, research skills and project management skills may be included at the discretion of the Licensed Body, and in proportion to the REnvTech competences. The relevance of work-based practice should reflect the domain of each individual Licensed Body, and be environmental in nature while clearly reflecting the REnvTech competences listed below.
Finally, in order to be eligible for REnvTech status, a candidate must be willing to comply with the Society’s Code of Professional Conduct, as laid out below in the “How to Apply” section.
In addition to eligibility criteria stated above, successful Registered Environmental Technicians must demonstrate each of the following twelve competences, across four broad areas. A downloadable version of the competences can be found here.
A1 Have underpinning knowledge of sustainability principles in the management of the environment.
Be aware of the environmental context in which the area of study or work is being undertaken.
Be aware of the importance of maintaining enhancing natural cycles and biodiversity in achieving sustainability.
Analyse and select appropriate techniques, procedures and methods in pursuit of more sustainable solutions.
Have a practical understanding of the constraints and implementation of well defined tasks in an environmental context.
A2 Apply environmental knowledge and principles in pursuit of sustainable environmental management.
Address situations that involve interacting environmental factors.Identify, select and use appropriate skills, methods and procedures.
Review the effectiveness of methods and actions used, learning from the results to improve future environmental solutions.
Work within the necessary contractual and agreed arrangements with other stakeholders.
A3 Analyse and evaluate problems from an environmental perspective, develop practical sustainable solutions and anticipate environmental trends to develop practical solutions.
Identify problems, that, while well defined, may be complex and non-routine from an environmental perspective.
Demonstrate an awareness of the complexity of current environmental issues.
Demonstrate commitment to tackling and addressing environmental issues.
Identify, adapt and use appropriate methods and skills to develop practical sustainable solutions.

B2 Implement and adhere to a strategic environmental approach

Demonstrate self-direction for undertaking some well defined tasks to try and achieve sustainable development and environmental improvement.
Work with other disciplines and stakeholders to tackle environmental challenges
Implement and transfers, where appropriate, environmentally appropriate technology.
Be aware of, and contribute to, the management of risk including health and safety, environmental, technical, business and reputational.
B3 Determine, allocate and supervise tasks.
Exercise autonomy and judgement within broad but generally well defined parameters across a range of environmental and sustainability issues.
Motivate and influence others to deliver environmental objectives.
Contribute to the identification of individual needs, plan for their development and the assessment of individual performance.

To become a Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) , you must first become a member of one of the three Licensed Bodies who can award it. Fees charged for membership each of the Licensed Bodies vary, and can typically be found through their website.
There is a one-off fee of £41 (2020) to be paid at first registration which comprises the initial entry fee (£20.50) and the annual registration fee (£20.50).

Have you been an REnvTech in the past, let your registration lapse, but would like to register to become an REnvTech again? It might be easier to reinstate than you think!
If you have been unable to continue as an REnvTech registrant due to non-payment of your annual fee(s) for any reason, you may still be able to reinstate as an REnvTech registrant again without completing the full application process a second time.
