Society for the Environment E-Newsletter
Issue #13 | Thursday 27th June 2019
Update from our Chair and Chief Executive

Welcome to the June edition of our e-newsletter, wrapping up what has been a very busy and hugely positive two months for the Society.

June is always an exciting month for us, with the Society having acted as a leading champion of World Environment Day (5th June) in the UK for a number of years. Our Awards and Lectures event held in honour of World Environment Day was highly successful and we have also played a leading role in the World Environment Day awareness campaign to #BeatAirPollution, helping to drive public engagement with this hugely important issue. We have also launched our exciting new podcast series and two 'Employer Champion' programmes

Environmental Professional of the Year Crowned

Held on the eve of World Environment Day, our Awards and Lectures event was hugely successful, attended by more than one hundred people.

The event, hosted by the beautiful Kew Gardens, saw the presentation of a number of honours and an expert line-up of topical talks.

The highlight of the event was the crowning of Jerome Baddley CEnv as the Environmental Professional of the Year. Jerome is currently Head of Unit - the National Sustainable Development Unit for the NHS, Public Health and Social Care at the NHS and Public Health England.

Amongst his many achievements, Jerome produced the very first NHS carbon reduction plans and the UK’s first city-wide energy and carbon strategy for Nottingham, resulting in significant reductions in carbon use.

Thank you for helping to #BeatAirPollution

Once again we have been heavily involved in the World Environment Day Awareness Campaign, this year focused around tackling one of the most significant environmental challenges that we face – air pollution.

The campaign has driven public engagement with the issue via social media and facilitated the collection of good practice case studies which can be found on our website. A big thank you to all who have contributed. As part of the campaign, we also partnered with Clean Air Day and launched the air-pollution themed first podcast of our new series ‘Interviews with Environmental Professionals’, which you can listen and subscribe to here.

The fight to tackle air pollution didn't stop with World Environment Day and we encourage you to continue sharing news and good practice by completing our case study form and using the hashtag #BeatAirPollution on social media.
