Our Board

Our Board’s main objectives are to direct the affairs of the Society within the framework of the Society’s Business Plan and Budget, and achieve the policies, strategies and objectives approved by the Members in General Meeting.

The Board acts on behalf of the Member Bodies with due regard to the Society’s Royal Charter in overseeing operational implementation of the Society’s strategic plan, annual business plans and risk management strategies, including:

  • Financial management in accordance with the budgets, policies and procedures approved by the Member Bodies;
  • The preparation and implementation of strategic plans for discussion at the General Meetings;
  • The Risk Register;
  • Staff remuneration;
  • Promotion of the CEnv, REnvP and REnvTech designations; and
  • Policy development, including furtherance of environmental policy.

Chair of Board

Dougal is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) registered via the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) and Chair of the Society for the Environment Board. He is Chair of Judges for the annual SocEnv Awards and SocEnv’s Board champion for World Environment Day.

Dougal is a founder and CEO of Grown in Britain, a not for profit organisation that sets standards for our trees, woods and forests and delivers research to improve local supply chains for forest products. He is also Chairman of the Forestry Commission’s SE Forestry and Woodlands Advisory Committee and a passionate advocate for the promotion of technical qualifications in the UK.

His career includes positions as Head of Profession for the Defence Estate, Regional Director for the Government Office South East and a Rural Director at Defra. Whilst at Defra, he undertook a career highlight in creating the South Downs National Park.

Natalie Akroyd CEnv

Board Member

Natalie is a CEnv registered through the Institute of Water. She was National Chair of the Institute of Water and served on the Board between 2015 and 2018, and is still an active committee member.

In her day job, Natalie is the Head of Water Strategy and Environment for South Staffs Water and Cambridge Water. She is responsible for the development and delivery of the long term water resources management plans, drought plans and the Water Industry National Environment Plan (WINEP) for both companies. She is also seconded part time into Water Resources East as a Technical Director, where she is jointly developing the first multi-sector water resources plan for the East of England covering the next 25 years.

With a career that spans nearly 20 years in the water industry, Natalie has also worked for both Yorkshire Water and Severn Trent Water in roles covering most areas of the business, including operations, capital investment and delivery, asset management, and business change and transformation.

Professor Ian Barker HonFSE CEnv

Board Member

Professor Ian Barker is Vice-President Environment, Fellow and non-executive Director at the Institute of Water, and Managing Director of Water Policy International Ltd, an independent consultancy and commentator on water management, regulation, policy and governance. He is also a non-executive Director of the Water Industry Forum, a Honorary Fellow of the Society of the Environment and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Exeter Centre for Water Systems.

Ian is a Chartered Environmentalist with over 35 years’ experience in the water sector. He had overall responsibility at the Environment Agency for water planning, regulation and management, as well as fisheries, biodiversity and land management, across England and Wales. At the EA Ian worked closely with the government and was responsible for specifying the water companies’ programmes of environmental investment totalling £1 billion per annum, and for reviewing their performance.

He is an expert advisor to the OECD, and has worked with them on water governance and management reviews in the Netherlands, South Korea and Brazil, as well as on various global projects. His other clients have included UNESCO, development banks, the UK and other governments, water companies and major consultancies. He typically works as a ‘critical friend’ and helps clients improve their plans and processes to support sustainable and resilient water management.

Martin Baxter CEnv

Chair of the Audit and Risk

Martin Baxter leads on IEMA's policy and external engagement activity and is a member of the the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) Board. He works in the UK, and internationally, to support the transition to a low carbon, resource efficient, and sustainable economy. Martin is a regular media spokesperson on a range of business sustainability topic areas. He has extensive experience of networking and communicating at all levels, including with senior parliamentarians, Government officials, business leaders, and academia.

Martin has national and international experience in developing and negotiating global and European standards and developing capacity for effective and widespread implementation. He is chair of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) sub-committee on environmental management systems and head of the UK delegation.

Martin sits on the SocEnv Board and the Audit and Risk committee. He is a Fellow of IEMA and the RSA, and a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) through IEMA.

Simon Benfield CEnv

Board Member

Simon is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), Chartered Technological Product Designer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers (iED). He is also a Member of the Association of Project Management. He is a Director for the multinational Danish consultancy Ramboll, working predominately in the field of bridge and other civil structure design. He has worked on some of the most iconic projects in both the UK and overseas with stints working in Hong Kong, Pakistan and India including the Queensferry Crossing, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and Hong Kong’s international airport at Chek Lap Kok.

In recent years Simon’s professional focus has been the standardisation, automation and productization of civil engineering structures to facilitate savings in both materials and processes with the attendant benefits to the environment from reduced wastage and emissions. He is also part of the working group charting Ramboll’s response to the Climate Emergency and their own journey to Net Zero.

Simon is a Councillor and former Chair of the Institution of Engineering Designers and current Chair of their membership committee where he supports the professional development and registration of others.

Francesca Berriman MBE

Board Member

Francesca Berriman has been Chief Executive at Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists since 1995 and has worked within the Architectural Technology and built environment sector for over 30 years. Amongst her many achievements, Francesca led the Institute in gaining its Royal Charter in 2005; and also its recognition as a Competent Authority within the European Union. In 2008 she undertook the first built environment UK Institute AGM in Hong Kong.

In addition to this Francesca is: a Trustee of the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and current Chair of its Programmes Committee; a Council member of (and former Vice Chair of both) the Society for the Environment (SocEnv), the Construction Industry Council (CIC); and is a member of Edge, a think tank for the built environment. Francesca has been a judge for a variety for awards such as the Women in Construction and Engineering Awards, and the Landscape Institute. She also sits on Panels and speaks at events and seminars internationally, most recently related to the Grenfell Tower fire and COVID-19.

Francesca was made an MBE in Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II’s 2012 Birthday Honours for services to the Architectural Technology profession; in 2014 she received an Honorary Doctorate of Technology from Southampton Solent University; and was the keynote speaker at the 2016 National Building Design International Conference in Australia.

Sue Buxey

RA Chair and Board Member

Sue joined the Institute of Environmental Management (IEMA) at the end of 2016 and is currently Director of Operations and Professional Standards.

She is a senior level operations leader with vast experience gained in the private and public sectors including financial services, telco, and utilities. Sue is experienced in leading multi-site, multi-channel customer service operations in B2C, B2B, international and regulated markets. Previous companies include Severn Trent Water, Vodafone, The Medical Defence Union, Barclays, and the Cabinet Office. Sue has a post graduate qualification from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and is an Associate member of IEMA.

Sue is a Board member of the Society and Chair of the Registration Authority (RA) having previously been a member of it for 2 years and is also a member of the SocEnv Nominations Committee. She is also a Director at the Specialist in Land Condition Register (SiLC) since 2019.

Colin Church CEnv

Board Member

Dr Colin Church is a Chartered Environmentalist via the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and is the Chief Executive and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), the global network for the materials cycle. He is Chair of the Circular Economy Task Force, a business led group convened by Green Alliance that aims to lead policy discussions with ambitious business thinking. Prior to working in the professional membership sector he spent over twenty years in the UK Civil Service covering a range of policy issues in the UK, EU and internationally.

Peter Egan CEnv

Board Member

Peter Egan is a passionate Chartered Engineer who has worked with the Ministry of Defence for 27 years, while driving sustainable outcomes across a range of institutions. He has worked across the Middle East, Africa, South Atlantic and the UK delivering bespoke solutions to UK Defence commitments, where he has incorporated environment impacts against the UN 17 sustainable Development Goals, reducing project environmental impacts. Peters’ passions are education and mentoring engineers and construction professionals in the of delivery biodiverse, carbon reduction and resilient outcomes in all our futures.

Alan Harper CEnv

Honorary Secretary of the Board

A Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IoP) and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), Alan has been fully active in environmental topics since 1990 with significant involvement in gas scrubbing and dust suppression before this. Serving in ICI, Zeneca, AstraZeneca and its spinout - Avecia - successively as Environmental Process Engineer, Principal Environmental Process Technologist and Principal Environmental Technology Consultant as business and available technology developed. Led industry groups to develop non vertebrate environmental testing (Biowise Award 2002). Leaving industry in 2005, Alan joined Heriot-Watt to teach Sustainability Engineering at Masters level while continuing consultancy. Served as Technical Manager for Scotland for the Resource Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability KTNs and worked with the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme with work supporting pharmaceutical, chemical and whisky sectors.

Alan has been heavily involved with professional institutions since 1986; Council member and Chair of Professional Standards with IoP, various positions at IChemE and also with both the Engineering and Science Councils. Alan joined the SocEnv Council in 2018, chairing the Governance Task and finish Group and becoming Honorary Secretary in 2019.

Alan is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) registered via his membership of IChemE.

Graham Higginson REnvP

Board Member

Fellow of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE), Graham has been fully active in the sphere of agricultural engineering from hand-held devices for the agricultural crop trials industry right through to large scale commercial farming machinery and everything in between. Joining IAgrE as a student at Writtle College, and progressing to local branch office holder. Currently, Graham chairs his local branch and sits on a range of IAgrE national committees, including Executive and Membership committees.

Year 2000 saw a career shift to engineering education and training, currently working at Harper Adams University, via an enjoyable two-year sabbatical in the motor industry. In his role, Graham delivers education and training to engineers and agriculturalists in the spheres of design and operation of machinery and infrastructure for effective and efficient use, with consideration of environmental impacts, such as, watercourse pollution and soil health.

As a registered engineer and the ninth Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP), Graham is an advocate of professional status at all levels, frequently mentoring and supporting applicants.

Brian Robinson CEnv

Board Member

Brian runs his own consultancy business, BJR Solutions Ltd, delivering engineering and research project management services to a range of clients including Department for Transport, Transport & Environment, the University of Exeter and Zemo Partnership. Brian’s work for Zemo involves running its Commercial Vehicle Working Group and overseeing various van and truck-related emissions reduction initiatives, as well as acting as their main point of contact on all freight transport emissions issues. Brian is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist, and has over thirty years’ experience in transport, energy and climate change policy, sustainability and vehicle safety. Before forming his own business in 2014, Brian spent many years in increasingly senior roles at TRL Ltd, carrying out mostly HGV-related safety and environmental research. Brian also has various voluntary roles, being on the Board of the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) and an active member of both the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Particular areas of interest include transport sustainability and decarbonisation, zero emission vehicle technologies and adoption and Energy system optimisation.

Kirsten Röttcher CEnv

Board Member

Kirsten is a consultant currently working as a technical director at Mott MacDonald in the field of environmental and social safeguards. Her work encompasses construction and operations monitoring, acquisition due diligence, environmental and social due diligence, red flag reviews, technical and environmental due diligence, environmental and social management planning and impact assessment, environmental and socio-economic baseline studies, strategic environmental and social assessment, stakeholder engagement plans, stakeholder engagement across government and society (PRA/RRA, KII, FGD, HH interviews), resettlement action plans, land use planning, management of resources, promotion of national content and local economic development, HIV/AIDS mainstreaming and institutional capacity assessment.

She has managed and supervised multi-disciplinary teams and projects to international financing institute and regulatory requirements. Sectors Kirsten has worked in include: transport, energy, renewables, urban development, decentralized rural development and natural resource management.

Kirsten has worked long-term in Tanzania, Lesotho and Azerbaijan, medium-term in Oman and Uganda, short-term in Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya, Senegal, Ethiopia, Zambia, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Germany, UK and the Falkland Islands. She has input remotely to projects in Nigeria, Angola, Israel, Mozambique, UK, Qatar, Cameroon, Madagascar, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Kurdistan and Uzbekistan.

Kirsten is registered as a CEnv via Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

Ross Weddle CEnv

I am a Forester. This career choice was partially made because of a personal pleasure in, and a commitment to, the environment. So, after working up to becoming a Professional Member of the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF), I jumped at the chance to become a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv). As my experience and expertise have accumulated I have been lucky enough to be able to specialise in Natural Capital, Continuous Cover and Urban Forestry. My work is aligned with understanding and nurturing the environment and my role with SocEnv is a small part of a global movement acknowledging that life is nature.

Lara Young CEnv

Board Member

Lara joined Cromwell Property Group in January 2023 after working in the construction and engineering industry for over 10 years. As Group Head of ESG, she works on further developing the Cromwell’s existing ESG framework and aligning the ESG strategy with the business’s overall strategic objectives.

Prior to joining Cromwell, Lara was the driving force behind establishing and implementing Costain’s Climate Change Action Plan, which set out a detailed 15-year plan to transition to a net-zero organisation by 2035. She was most recently shortlisted as 2023 Net zero and Energy leader of the year at the edie sustainability awards and was named 2022 Young Person of the Year by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and Energy and Carbon Leader of the Year at the 2021 edie Awards. Lara has been the Chair of the Institution of Civil Engineer’s (ICE) Carbon Champion Review Panel since May 2021, has been a Chartered Environmentalist since 2020 and recently became a Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

Our Registration Authority

The Registration Authority (RA) is appointed by the Board in accordance with the relevant Bylaws.  The RA is responsible to the Board for the developing and maintaining definitions and standards for admission to the Registers and setting standards for the award of the professional designations, including:

  • licensing bodies to award and remove the professional designations authorised by Regulations;
  • monitoring the activities of Licensed Members with respect to the Registers;
  • giving guidance, specifying information required and giving directions on the format of applications;
  • establishing a Code of Professional Conduct pursuant to the Bylaws;
  • establishing procedures for the consideration of complaints of unprofessional conduct and any related appeals;
  • establishing disciplinary procedures for Registrants following a finding of unprofessional conduct;
  • ensuring that Licensed Members adopt and pursue all such procedures;
  • monitoring the professional conduct of Registrants normally through their Licensed Member body;
  • monitoring the professional development of Registrants normally through their Licensed Member;
  • carrying out any other functions that may from time to time be prescribed by the Board;
  • publishing, from time to time, a list of licences granted;
  • undertaking a self-evaluation of its effectiveness each year and submitting an annual review report to the Board.

Alastair Taylor CEnv

Chief Licence Reviewer & RA Member

Alastair is an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and following retirement from his role as CEO of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers continues as a freelance specialist in engineering and technology for agriculture. As part of this, and through his association with the Royal Academy of Engineering, Alastair has travelled extensively across Southern Africa and as such has a comprehensive understanding of the context and challenges of agricultural engineering in the region.

During the past year, Alastair has been editing a report for the Pan African Society of Agricultural Engineering titled: Agricultural Engineering in Africa: A Key Driver for Transforming Agriculture to Deliver Food Security and to Support Economic Prosperity. Alastair is active in the developments of professional engineering standards for Engineering UK and acts as Chief Licence Reviewer for the UK Society of the Environment.

Alastair was bought up on a farm in the eastern part of England and originally trained as an Agricultural Engineer. He spent over forty years immersed in the agriculture, engineering and emerging Agritech industries. He spent 20 years working in front line education where he undertook various roles within the teaching and management of agriculture and mechanisation, including irrigation, farm buildings, waste management and financial management.

In 2000, Alastair joined UK national inspectorate for vocational education becoming well known as an inspector of the subject and leader of inspection teams. From 2013 to 2019, Alastair was the Chief Executive of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers, the professional body for professional engineers working in the industry.

Robert Bradley CEnv

RA Member

Rob Bradley gained his Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) status in 2013 with the Institute of Water and has subsequently become an assessor and active mentor. He led the Scottish Area's Mentoring & Registration sub-committee for 3 years, leading to being awarded Distinguished and Committee member of the year for 2020.

He joined the SocEnv Registration Authority (RA) in 2019 and brought with him extensive knowledge and experience of assessing CEnv and REnvTech applicants. His opinion is respected, and he has made many notable contributions to RA discussions. Rob’s input to the development of the REnvP standards and assessment model has been invaluable. 

Sophie Dunajko

Sophie Dunajko is the Head of Membership and Professional Standards at the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), having previously worked across a number of senior roles in the organisation including events and international development. The institution represents a community of over 10,000 experts managing the natural environment around the world and answering the urgent challenges posed by the climate and ecological emergencies.

Sophie is committed to developing the professional skills of future generations and promoting diversity and inclusion across all areas of professional registration, working towards an inclusive profession, supporting those from diverse backgrounds and advancing individuals throughout their careers.

Alan Fitzpatrick CEnv

RA Member

Alan is an experienced engineer in the power and renewable sector and has also served as an engineering officer at sea, an engineer surveyor and a head office engineer for RSA.

Plus, he has had teaching / training roles with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Having retired in late 2020, Alan now volunteers with Citizens Advice providing guidance to the public and specialising in being an Energy Adviser. This ensures those members of the public in hardship and or in need of information are well proved. This specialist knowledge will also be helpful to both the SOE, the Society for the Environment and their members / registrants.

Alan is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) registered via his membership of the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE).

Kevin Hogwood CEnv

RA Member

I started my career as a design engineer in the civil service within the Department of Environment and specialised initially in Aviation Ground Lighting and HV distribution. Trained as a Building Services Engineer I gained my BEng & MSc via Brunel University and worked in that field for the likes of Troup, Bywaters & Anders covering a variety of establishments from Crown owned property, ancient & historic, NHS and Military establishments, including involvement in Bomb blast assessments during the early 90’s.

I joined Serco in in the late 90’s maintaining a number of military training estates where interest in the environment became prevalent in the thought process.

Now a director of a multi-disciplinary design consultancy, the environment and the carbon footprint are at the forefront of our design process, working with the likes of Network Rail in ensuring design take full cognisance of sustainability and carbon reduction culminating in us designing the first carbon neutral station refurbishment in Europe at Denmark Hill, London.

I am a IED Fellow and member of the IED’s education & training committee. I am a Chartered Environmentalist via the IED and serve as a Licence Reviewer for the Society.

RA Member

Karl is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) through Institute of Agricultural Management (IAgrM) & Chartered Landscape Architect with over 24 years’ professional experience (including Expert witness) in landscape and environmental sectors. Experienced in LVIA, LCA, Green Belt Review, landscape planning and design and restoration detailing of industrial, mineral, landfill and brownfield sites and supervision of EIAs and planning applications for utilities and wind farm, housing and mixed-use masterplan schemes, EMPs and landscape contract administration work. He is Managing Director of Crestwood Environmental Ltd.

Karl is a current member of the Registration Authority for the Society for the Environment, a recent long-standing member of the Technical Committee of the Landscape Institute (LI), previous LI Mentor for ‘Pathway to Chartership’ and previous committee member of the ialeUK. Karl as contributed to a number of publications including BS42020 Biodiversity: Code of Practice for Planning & Development. Author of forthcoming Technical Information Note on Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment of Artificial Light & Lighting and on committee reviewing PLG04: Guidance on Undertaking Environmental Lighting Impact Assessment.

Sally Mousley CEnv

Sally is a Full member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) and a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) with over 35 years’ experience as a professional ecologist in the public sector. Sally currently works for Natural England, the government’s adviser for the natural environment in England, where she is leading the production of definitions of favourable conservation status.

Sally is also a member of CIEEM’s Membership Admissions Committee and Registration Authority and has for many years assessed applications for membership of CIEEM.

Mandhy Senewiratne CEnv

By day Mandhy is the Sustainability Champion for Melbourne Water’s Major Program Delivery Team, tasked with facilitating the development and delivery of a Scope 3 Carbon Baseline. Utilising her well-honed skills ranging from energy and water efficiency, carbon and resource management, responsible sourcing, climate resilience and adaptation and corporate social responsibility, to implement change management within Melbourne Water and influence the Victorian Water sector. Keen to continue her passion for developing the next generation of eco-warriors, particularly women, she is a key part of CMPs Gems in STEM program, delivering STEM presentations to Year 10 students, particularly targeting young ladies with a “Women in Water” feature.

At dusk Fyrefly emerges alongside her many alter egos. Ranging from the mischievous Plastic Princess to Mad Mandhy, who frequents on various on-line training courses such as the Institute of Waters’ Introduction to Water Industry Course, to highlight the environmental plight caused by single-use plastic. A member of the Institute of Water for over a decade, Mandhy specializes in the creation of environmentally themed events such as the highly popular World Environment Day debates. Mandhy was recognized for her contributions to the Institute in 2017 with a Committee Member of the Year award, and to the wider sustainability industry with SocEnv's 2020 Environmental Professional of the Year award. In 2021 Mandhy also received an award for Outstanding Contributions by the Institute for her services to the industry.

Toby Underwood

Toby Underwood CChem CSci MRSC works at the Royal Society of Chemistry as the Manager for Accreditation & Careers.  His responsibilities include career management; degree accreditation; all Charter designations including CEnv; and support for vocational pathways. He has a knowledge and expertise of overseas degree programmes through development of the RSC International Accreditation project, and apprenticeship reforms in the UK by increasing RSC support for that sector. 

Toby previously worked in multinational pharma, working within synthetic and medicinal chemistry and has publications and patents in those areas.  This led to management of a chemical technology group with multiple academic collaborations, which fostered an enthusiasm in working in both these arenas, and hence moving to the Royal Society of Chemistry to support that work.

Rodney Wilkinson

Rod is a hydrologist by qualification (a member of the British Hydrological Society), who worked for Severn Trent Water Ltd and its predecessor organisations until his retirement in 2012. He continues as a Consultant Hydrologist with a specialist area in strategic water resources planning. However, his experience extends to water treatment and operational planning, along with reservoir safety assessments and operational risk analysis.

Rod is also a member of four Standards Committees on hydrometry and flood risk at the British Standards Institution (BSI). He is also a regular UK delegate at meetings of the mirror committees of CEN, the European standards organisation, and ISO, the International Standards Organisation. With ISO, he is the Chair of the technical sub-committee on flow measuring structures.

Rod is a Fellow of Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), with which he is a Professional Reviewer and member of its higher education course Accreditation Board. He has also mentored several C.WEM and CEnv candidates. He has been associated with SocEnv since its inception and has extensive experience as a Licensed Member Reviewer. He is Lead Assessor with the RA’s Review Panel.

The Panel assesses nominations for Honorary Fellow of the Society for the Environment (HonFSE). It receives nominations from Member Bodies, supported by another Member Body. The Panel is responsible for making a favourable determination if at least five of the Panel agree the nomination meets the requirements of the Society.

Tapiwa Gavaza BSc MSc MICE CEng CEnv is the Founding Director of Quantum Consulting Engineers and the CEO of Water Offsets Ltd. He is a development engineering professional with over 20 years international experience, specialising in civil engineering and infrastructure design projects and lately with a focus on achieving water and nutrient neutrality. Leading the delivery of innovative solutions to address water neutrality for both strategic land sites and smaller sites. At Water Offsets Ltd we have set up theWaterBank; a water offsetting portal that matches developers with existing water users with large portfolios to deliver water neutral developments using water efficiency fittings, greywater recycling, and innovative infrastructure design.

He is a passionate advocate for addressing the housing crisis, holistic environmental design and climate change. Tapiwa has always maintained that "obstacles, constraints and difficulties are opportunities to find an engineered solution that simplifies the complex, demystifies the mystery and protects the environment." He has worked on notable strategic sites in the South of England including being a technical advisor to a board of an Institutional Fund for a large strategic mixed use development involving more than 5,000 homes.

Professor Ian Barker HonFSE CEnv

Professor Ian Barker is Vice-President Environment, Fellow and non-executive Director at the Institute of Water, and Managing Director of Water Policy International Ltd, an independent consultancy and commentator on water management, regulation, policy and governance. He is also a non-executive Director of the Water Industry Forum, a Honorary Fellow of the Society of the Environment and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Exeter Centre for Water Systems.

Ian is a Chartered Environmentalist with over 35 years’ experience in the water sector. He had overall responsibility at the Environment Agency for water planning, regulation and management, as well as fisheries, biodiversity and land management, across England and Wales. At the EA Ian worked closely with the government and was responsible for specifying the water companies’ programmes of environmental investment totalling £1 billion per annum, and for reviewing their performance.

He is an expert advisor to the OECD, and has worked with them on water governance and management reviews in the Netherlands, South Korea and Brazil, as well as on various global projects. His other clients have included UNESCO, development banks, the UK and other governments, water companies and major consultancies. He typically works as a ‘critical friend’ and helps clients improve their plans and processes to support sustainable and resilient water management.

Sarah Beacock

Sarah has been CEO at the Nuclear Institute since February 2017 and led the team to grow the membership and events programme in that period. With other changes such as a new publisher for Nuclear Future and a modernised governance system this has been a period of great change and development for the Institute towards a sustainable future.

Prior to becoming CEO Sarah worked in other membership bodies for over 25 years including the Energy Institute and Chartered Insurance Institute. Prior to that she began her career in the accreditation and assessment field with the RSA Examinations Board (now OCR) and also spent a period of four years as a freelance editor and consultant in the insurance field.

She has a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science and her 20+ years in the energy industry have given her worldwide experience and expertise in the skills needs of all parts of the industry. She is a Fellow of the Energy Institute.

Alan Fitzpatrick CEnv

Alan is an experienced engineer in the power and renewable sector and has also served as an engineering officer at sea, an engineer surveyor and a head office engineer for RSA.

Plus, he has had teaching / training roles with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Having retired in late 2020, Alan now volunteers with Citizens Advice providing guidance to the public and specialising in being an Energy Adviser. This ensures those members of the public in hardship and or in need of information are well proved. This specialist knowledge will also be helpful to both the SOE, the Society for the Environment and their members / registrants.

Alan is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) registered via his membership of the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE).

Professor Mark Jolly CEnv

Mark is Professor and Director of Manufacturing. He has almost 40 years’ experience in manufacturing. He spent 13 years working in industry in automotive and tier 1&2 suppliers into manufacturing both in the UK and abroad before moving into academia in 1995. In 2012 he joined Cranfield after 17 years at the University of Birmingham. He has managed over £17.5 M of research projects since 1999 and has over 350 publications, technical reports, articles and books.

He is Director of the recently announced UKRI Transforming the Foundation Industries Research and Innovation Hub (TransFIRe), co-Director of the Circular Economy Network plus in Transport Systems (CENTS), and co-Director of the Engineering and Physical sciences Research Council Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing which offers a triple degree with the Universities of Warwick and Exeter. Mark has sat on the EPSRC Peer Review College since 2003 and sits on the council of the Cast Metals Federation, is a reviewer for the European Space Agency (ESA) and Enterprise Ireland.

He is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist. He is a Trustee, Member of the Executive Board and Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Cast Metals Engineers (ICME). He was Chair of the Solidification Committee of The Mineral Metals and Materials Society (TMS, USA) for two years until 2018. Mark is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Founders and Freeman of the City of London.

Mark is the recipient of the 2019 John Campbell Gold Medal awarded by ICME for “continual advancement in sustainable manufacturing and promotion of excellence in casting technologies”. He was the 2010 Winner of the University of Birmingham Josiah Mason Founder’s Award for Business Advancement and in 2008 was the recipient of the Oliver Stubbs Medal (ICME).
