SocEnv COVID-19 Statement

As the Society for the Environment adapts to this changing environment, influenced by the spread of COVID-19, I want to keep communication fully open with an update on the actions that we are taking to ensure that we continue to support you, as our Licensed Members, Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) registrants, aspiring registrants, Honorary Fellows, partners and interested parties.
Firstly, the health and safety of our employees and networks are my priority and, as such, Society for the Environment members of staff (including myself) have been working remotely (from home) since Monday 16th March. In line with our sustainability policy and our Pledge to Net Zero we already conduct much of our business online. We have therefore been able to move fully online with little disruption to business as usual. The only delay in processes that we foresee will be in the distribution of printed CEnv and REnvTech certificates. New registrants will still receive physical welcome letters and certificates as and when we are able to return to Head Office. In the meantime, we are working with our Licensed Members to implement a temporary digital solution involving digital versions of these documents distributed via email. We are very keen to continue to formally congratulate new CEnv and REnvTech registrants and to formalise registration transfers to new Licensed Members until printed versions can be issued again.
We are moving all of our activity online (or on the phone) for the foreseeable future. This includes committee, special interest groups and team meetings, as well as communication with our partners and networks. We already conduct many of our meetings in this manner. While this requires a different style of working, we are well versed in using these tools and I look forward to inviting you to join us at some of those meetings in the coming weeks.
There will be challenges in the days and months ahead in light of COVID-19. However, the wide environmental issues and opportunities we face have not gone away and we will continue working in a new way to make sure we continue to address this.
We are here to support you in your work to protect and enhance the environment across sectors, and to offer a friendly “hi, how are you?” in this difficult time. With the latter in mind, I have put measures in place to encourage regular web-based verbal and visual communications between the Society for the Environment team from their remote desks to go some way to combat the potential for mental health problems created through isolation, and I very much encourage you to do the same. Now is not the time to isolate whilst in physical isolation – technology is here to help us to stay in touch, please embrace it.
