This morning at a highly anticipated environment speech from the London Wetland Centre, Prime Minister Theresa May launched the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs' 25 Year Environment Plan, which "sets out what we will do to improve the environment, within a generation".

The Society for the Environment welcomes the vision of the 25 Year Environment Plan.

The Plan sets out the Government's ambition to "be the first generation to leave the environment in a better state than we found it".

The Society's CEO, Dr Emma Wilcox, who attended the launch of the long-awaited 25 Year Environment Plan, welcomed its vision whilst adding that "in order for the ambition to be met successfully, we need strong leadership and good governance as well as a statutory basis for the plan."

Back at Head Office, our Policy Lead, Dr Tatum Matharu, is eager to delve into the detail of the document and work with our constituent bodies and registered environmental professionals to contribute towards any consultation exercises. "We hope that it is thorough and holistic," she commented, "enabling us to join the dots between the recent raft of initiatives in the environmental sector as well as all of those in related sectors, predicated on us protecting and sustaining our natural environment."

Following an initial glance at the Plan, Tatum expresses that she is "pleased to see explicit reference and connection to the Clean Growth and Industrial Strategies".

The Society remains confident that the interventions which eventually transpire will be implemented to the highest standards by our Chartered Environmentalists and Registered Environmental Technicians across the range of sectors in which they work.
