Dr Tony Juniper HonFSE CEnv Joins WWF to Lead Charity's Campaign Work

01 November 2017   (0 Comments)

Respected environmentalist and campaigner Dr Tony Juniper HonFSE CEnv has been appointed to lead WWF's advocacy and campaigns in the UK, the conservation charity announced yesterday.

Juniper, who recently co-authored the Ladybird Guide to Climate Change alongside the Prince of Wales and scientist Dr Emily Shuckburgh, takes over as Executive Director for campaigns and advocacy at WWF UK.

He is expected to play a key role in the charity's plans to develop "a new strategic direction focused on reversing the decline in global biodiversity".

WWF Chief Executive, Tanya Steele, said she was "delighted" that someone with Juniper's experience and passion for nature conservation was joining the organisation.

"The crisis we face in terms of the global loss of nature over the past half century is a great untold story of our generation," she said in a statement. "Tony will help us tell that story, and advocate for the change we need to see in the world if we're to build a future where both people and nature thrive."

A leading environmental campaigner and author, Juniper is a special advisor at the Prince of Wales's International Sustainability Unit, a Fellow with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, and a co-founder of sustainability consultancy group Robertsbridge.

He is also President of green charity the Wildlife Trusts, President of the Society for the Environment and a Harmony Professor of Practice at the University of Wales Trinity St David, and a trustee at several green groups and causes.

Beginning his career as an ornithologist, Juniper went on to become Director at Friends of the Earth and authored several books, including the award-winning 'What has Nature Ever Done for Us?' in 2013. Earlier this year he was awarded a CBE for services to conservation.

Juniper said it was "an honour" to be joining WWF. "What we humans choose to do during the coming years will determine outcomes with profound ramifications, not only for our living planet but people too," he said. "I very much look forward to working with my new colleagues in making the most of all the opportunities we have for shaping our choices in positive directions. Time is short and the stakes increasingly high."
