The Society for the Environment celebrated environmental professionalism through its Environmental Professional of the Year Award today.

The award was presented to Dr Phillippa Pearson CEnv, member of the Institute of Water and working for utilities company Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. The Society also recognised two finalists who were highly commended; Elaine McFarlane CEnv of the Energy Institute, working for Shell, and Graham Powell CEnv of the Institute of Water, working for Anglian Water.

All three finalists impressed the Society, but It was judged that Phillippa perfectly exemplified registered environmental professionals and was considered to be an outstanding example of a Chartered Environmentalist, especially in regards to her mentoring and communications work.

Dr Emma Wilcox, Chief Executive Officer of the Society, said “This Award demonstrates the exceptional achievements and personal commitments of environmental professionals and the positive impact of being registered.”

“Our nominees, shortlist and winner work for wide variety of organisations, which together impact millions of people lives. I am really pleased with the support which these organisations give to their staff, which shows a welcome shift towards environmentally sound and sustainable working practices. We intend to use all their stories to inspire more people to become environmental professionals and, of course, to become registered environmental professionals.”

“We received entries from a broad range of environmental professionals; from academics, independent contractors, employees of large and small organisations and environmental consultants. All of the nominees are working towards promoting and incorporating sustainable working and should be congratulated.”

The Society will be sharing the stories of our finalists over the coming weeks and months to inspire more people, from all levels and sectors, to pursue environmental professionalism within their careers.

Dr Peter Matthews, Chair of the Society, said “I am pleased I had the opportunity to present this award and promote the influence of registered environmental professionals. Having helped found the Society, I am proud of what our registrants continue to achieve in terms of promoting and practicing environmental sustainability. This demonstrates that the behaviours demonstrated by our nominees, alongside their careful and diligent work in creating a culture of sustainable practice, are as necessary as regulation for a green future.”

The award was presented at the inaugural ENDS Impact Awards. It brought together workers from across the sustainability and environmental sectors to recognise outstanding contributions to sustainable working.
