The Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) and Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) Practice Directions (PDs) are subject to regular, periodic review which ensures they are both up to date and fit for purpose.

In 2023, Members of the Registration Authority completed a comprehensive review of the CEnv, REnvP and REnvTech standards. They not only mapped the practice directions against our Standards, Royal Charter, Regulations and By-laws, to see if changes were needed, but also considered suggestions from Licensed Members.

The current PDs contain the new standards and updated assessment criteria. They should be used with immediate effect. Potential registrants working to the previous standards may complete there application, but from 1st January 2024 we will only accept registrations using the new standards.

In May 2023, workshops were held to help support the transition from the old standards, to the current. A video was put together to include the Q&A sessions from all four workshops, which can be viewed via YouTube.

We champion all credible routes into the environmental sector. With this in mind, we dedicate resources to environmental apprenticeships to provide leadership and to support a vital entry route for future environmental leaders. Recent work has included the development and launch of the Environmental Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship (level 6).

The new SocEnv CPD Policy, which still includes the key elements of monitoring and sampling of registrants CPD, is now complemented by a Purpose Statement and Good Practice. These three documents have been approved by the Board and are available for all licensed members to use with immediate effect.

A Bespoke Route is an alternative process used to demonstrate the CEnv, REnvP or REnvTech competency standard. A Licensed Member can apply to the Registration Authority for approval of a Bespoke Route request, using the application form.

The application shall be presented to the Registration Authority, trialled using a small pilot group, and monitored on an on-going basis through licence reviews.

Whilst a Bespoke Route will differ in some way from the Professional Review Route, the Licensed Member must be able to show that applicants following this route will/do satisfy all the eligibility criteria and meet all the CEnv, REnvP or REnvTech competences.
