Summary:
There is a mismatch between the time that soils take to form and to recover from degradation, versus the pace of their exploitation by humans. And the soil system operates at both much smaller and greater scales than those humans have evolved to recognise and experience. The consequences are a gap in individual human and societal awareness and understanding of soil development, which is a core driver for the many negative human impacts on soil resources.
The operation of the soil system in space and time is explored in this webinar, from micro to landscape scales, driven by processes operating from season to season that have formed soil over millennia. These soil dimensions are contrasted with those of human impacts – both direct via land and soil management, and indirect from wider human-induced environmental change.
Held in the lead-up to World Soil Day, this webinar will explore the current and future economic implications of the above and deliver an urgent call to action for stronger soil protection policy and regulation, supported by better community-based soil education and practitioner-led soil management.
Our speaker, Mark Kibblewhite HonFSE CEnv FIAgrE, was one of the very first professionals to gain Chartered Environmentalist status, back in 2004, and was recognised as a Honorary Fellow of the Society for the Environment in 2026.

Mark Kibblewhite HonFSE CEnv FIAgrE, Emeritus Professor at Cranfield University
Mark is an environmental chemist specialising in soil science, whose expertise supports farmer groups, governments and international institutions. He studied chemistry at York and for a PhD at Aberdeen. He has an MBA from Cranfield University, where he was later Director of the National Soil Resources Institute and Head of the Natural Resources Department and is now an Emeritus Professor. Other previous roles include being Chair of Dorset Wildlife Trust, President of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers, Chair of the European Soil Bureau Network, Head of Land Quality at the Environment Agency, Divisional Director at Hyder Consulting and a Head of Division at Warren Spring Laboratory.
