Next Steps for Reducing Food and Packaging Waste Across the UK - Consumer Behaviour, Innovation and Energy Recovery
This Westminster Food & Nutrition Forum seminar will bring together policymakers and key stakeholders across the food supply chain to discuss the next steps for reducing food and packaging waste in the UK.
Sessions will discuss the way forward for avoidable waste prevention, including changing consumer behaviour, promoting further collaboration and innovation across the food industry, and priorities for meeting WRAP’s Courtald Commitment 2025 to reduce resource consumption in the food supply chain by 20% by 2025.
Further sessions will assess priorities for promoting and enforcing the waste hierarchy, as well as investment challenges and opportunities for more sustainable waste management practices. Discussion will also look at UK-wide perspectives on food waste policy including lessons learnt from devolved and international approaches.

- Consumer behaviour - next steps for the food industry, local authorities and others to reduce avoidable waste, including portion sizes, promotions, food labelling and reporting;
- Innovation - identifying the most promising developments in the design and packaging stages to reduce resource consumption and improve food shelf life;
- Enforcing the waste hierarchy - priorities for policy, and incentives and sanctions for businesses, including SMEs, to promote the separation and recycling of food waste;
- Funding and investment - opportunities for supporting redistribution of surplus food, energy recovery and recycling management infrastructure for unavoidable waste; and
- Packaging recovery and recycling options - including the future role of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes; and an industry case study from Coca-Cola European Partners
