Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE) to Host STEM Ambassadors at Cereals

IAgrE will be part of Cereals new feature ‘Fields of the Future’ in partnership with STEM Ambassadors to promote a host of exciting career opportunities related to agri-tech and agricultural engineering to an audience of teachers.

"We are delighted to promote the message that careers in the land-based sector are exciting and at the cutting edge of research. I will be taking a group of teachers around Cereals to demonstrate the cutting edge research available and introducing them to industry experts to widen their knowledge and understanding of the technology used in the arable industry and the fabulous career opportunities available for young people,"  said Alastair Taylor, CEO of IAgrE.

The ‘Fields of the Future’ area will include a combination of demonstrations and information boards highlighting new developments. Examples are Harper Adams' 'Hands Free Hectare' project which aims to farm spring barley crops exclusively using robots and AHDB’s Thorvald agricultural robot, which has been built to perform a wide variety of agricultural tasks including acting as a multi-purpose light weight robotic carrying platform and as a sensor platform to monitor crops and soils.

Teachers will also have access to a wide variety of materials from Cereals’ exhibitors, which can be used in the curriculum.

Alastair Taylor, CEO of IAgrE added: "In past generations, engineering for agriculture would have meant bigger and bigger tractors. Today, the disciplines and skills required include robotics, computer based imaging, GPS technology, science based solutions, climate forecasting and much, much more – it’s a great career choice."
