The UK government has recently set out two ambitious and long-term strategic objectives, namely the 25-year environmental action plan and a commitment for the UK to be zero net carbon by 2050. This conference critically examines these two challenges, with an emphasis on rigorous systems thinking and numerical estimates.

As part of the 25-year plan a new UK resources and waste strategy has been introduced, according to which 65% of municipal waste (including plastics) should be recycled by 2035. This is, however, meaningless without a definition of "recyling"; after defining it one can examine whether 65% is sensible or arbitrary. Major trends such as the proliferation of electric vehicles and household electrical storage will require a new approach to battery design and recycling. By applying systems thinking to encompass the "big picture", some elements of the strategy emerge as self-contradictory. For example, packaging recovery and recycling systems may result in increased transport and processing emissions, and energy from waste is likely to require carbon capture and storage, which may upset its commercial viability. The contributions of  the circular economy concept and life cycle analysis to achieving the challenging objectives within the envisaged timescales will be delineated.

Dedicated sessions will look at a number of topics including 'Product & Process Design for a Low-Carbon Economy' - chaired by our very own Dr Emma Wilcox.
