As the UK prepares to leave the European Union (EU), the EU (Withdrawal) Act 2018 will ensure existing EU environmental law continues to have effect in UK law even after our departure from the Union, providing businesses and stakeholders with maximum certainty.

This would include any commitments from the Circular Economy Package (CEP) in relation to waste and recycling that are part of UK legislation. The package includes targets to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, sets higher targets for recycling of various everyday materials and overall packaging waste recycling targets.

In contrast to these objectives, evidence suggests that the rate of change towards a more circular economy may have slowed over the last few years.

Having adopted the EU CEP in June, the UK government published its Resources and Waste Strategy for England last December. This document included bold targets for England, including the desire to explore whether further stretching targets (over and above those proposed by the EU in the CEP) can be developed that will deliver the most effective approach to recycling.

These targets will focus on the weight and the environmental impacts of waste and will ensure that the frequency and scope of household waste collections is not undermined.

Join IEMA at this next webinar session for a review of these objectives under the Resources & Waste Strategy, how these compare to those set out in the recommendations paper submitted to DEFRA by IEMA, and a wider discussion on the business case for becoming more resource effective and moving organisational thinking towards the Circular Economy.
