Summary

A one-day practical course aimed at those practitioners who have several years’ existing experience of undertaking EcIAs. The course will follow the approach to EcIA set out in CIEEM’s guidelines, and will focus on the terrestrial (rather than the marine) environment. A one-day practical course aimed at those practitioners who have several years’ existing experience of undertaking EcIAs, but who wish to develop these skills further or refresh existing skills. The focus will be on delivering teaching through a combination of Powerpoint presentations and workshops, with attendees working through a variety of case study examples (all relating to terrestrial ecology). Those attending will be asked to provide case studies for discussion.

The course will not cover all aspects of the EcIA process, but will focus on those topics which can be more difficult to get to grips with: identifying important ecological features, characterising impacts and determining significance. Attendees will therefore be expected to have existing practical experience of EcIA and an understanding of how it fits with EIA, as well as knowledge of the legislation and policy drivers behind EcIA.

Who Should Attend?

There is overlap in course material between all 3 levels of EcIA course, and those attending will be expected to have gained some practical experience of EcIA.

Experienced ecological consultants with several years’ experience of undertaking ecological impact assessment at a variety of different levels, including as part of formal EIAs.
Those who have previously attended the level two course and wish to extend their understanding of EcIA.

NOTE 1: It is not expected that someone who has attended the level 2 course would also attend the level 3 course in the same year, but would gain some additional practical experience of EcIA before attending the level 3 course.

NOTE 2: Practitioners with more than 8-10 years’ experience of undertaking EcIAs may find this course does not accommodate their needs and should contact CIEEM for further advice before booking.
