CPD Purpose Statement
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the process of continually maintaining, improving, and broadening your skills and knowledge, as well as developing personal qualities, which help to ensure registrants remain a competent professional. SocEnv regards the ongoing development and enhancement through CPD activities critical to its registrants, underpinned by our Royal Charter, recognising a variety of learning styles and opportunities available, the purpose of this is to:
- Develop the skills and knowledge across the profession to drive sustainable growth and action to tackle the climate and ecological emergencies.
- Continuously develop competence, professional and skills through a variety of learning activities to the benefit of both the individual’s practice and its stakeholders.
- Allow for ongoing reflection on activities to identify key learning outcomes, future plans and areas for development – enabling learning to become conscious and proactive rather than passive and reactive.
- Plan for future CPD activities to maintain the level of topical environmental knowledge and address any weaknesses in overall competences. Annual CPD plans or records should propose activities with clearly stated outcomes.
Each Licensed Member (LM) has its own CPD Policy in place, therefore the LM provides the details of its expectations for participation in CPD, how it will monitor CPD, select a sample and give feedback. Their policy should also include a procedure for dealing with an individual failing or refusing to submit their CPD records when requested.
Sufficient CPD is defined as the number of relevant activities that individuals need to do each year to satisfy competency D1 (see the relevant registration Practice Direction) and remain competent in their professional role. Each LM decides what is sufficient.
