Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), Dr Cathryn MacCallum CEnv FIMMM, is the joint winner of the Outstanding Contribution Award for EDI.
The Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3) celebrated its 2024 Awards Day on Thursday 5 December at its London office. The Outstanding Contribution Award for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) was one of many awards presented last week.
Who is Dr Cathryn MacCallum CEnv FIMMM?
Cathryn is Director at Sazani Associates and achieved CEnv registration with IOM3 in 2017.

Cathryn is a pioneer in bringing alternative perspectives into the wider materials, minerals and mining sector. Bringing her expertise from a previous career in sustainable rural livelihoods, community engagement and global learning, where she is widely published, and she retains strong academic and practical links, she embraced the challenge. Years of shaping national policy and delivering transnational development programmes; she was awarded a prestigious World Aware Laureate from the North South Centre, Council of Europe Council of Europe, for one of them, she was ready to challenge orthodoxy. From her involvement in the UK Commission of UNESCO, to her subsequent publications about how Sazani Associates’ educational programmes were challenging the rise of austere forms of Islam in Zanzibar, she supported structural changes that delivered opportunities for girls and woman and social justice for the excluded.

The Outstanding Contribution Award for EDI
For significant contributions, either in terms of contribution to EDI across IOM3, and/or promotion of EDI to the wider materials, minerals and mining communities.
This award is intended to support members from underrepresented groups including those who identify as women, people from the LGBTQ+ community, people from ethnic minorities, those that are neurodiverse and members with disabilities.
Cathryn was the joint winner of this prestigious award alongside EUR ING Dawn Bonfield MBE FREng CEng FIMMM. IOM3 recognises excellence through a range of awards, medals, and prizes, honouring achievements, published work, and contributions to the Institute and profession. Awards span various categories, recognising individuals at all career stages, organisations, members, and non-members.
