Trinity House Continue Plastic Reduction Commitment

Posted By Dr Peter Matthews CBE HonFSE CEnv, 18 December 2018

In March 2018, through their Environmental Working Group and the Sub-Working Group on Plastics Reduction, Trinity House made a commitment to stop producing avoidable plastic waste by 2020. They are continuing their work towards this commitment and have shared their progress with the Society for the Environment six months on from a plastic themed World Environment Day 2018.

Trinity House is a charity dedicated to safeguarding shipping and seafarers, providing education, support and welfare to the seafaring community with a statutory duty as a General Lighthouse Authority to deliver a reliable, efficient and cost-effective aids to navigation service for the benefit and safety of all mariners. They gained their Royal Charter in 1514!

The Society's immediate past Chair, Dr Peter Matthews CBE HonFSE CEnv, played a key part in forming this commitment as a Non-Executive Director at Trinity House. They have shared their progress in the form of their "Plastic Reduction Newsletter" - the winter 2018 edition.

Headline work includes:

  • Reduce - Approximately 7,500 plastic bin liners saved
  • Reuse - Donating old mooring lines to the monkey enclosures at Colchester Zoo

It's all about good practice and sharing the successes to inspire others to follow suit.

More information about the plastic reduction work completed so far at Trinity House can be viewed on the PDF below.
