The Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) is the leading professional membership body representing and supporting ecologists and environmental mangers in the UK, Ireland and abroad. CIEEM has been proactive and engaged in providing a voice for the sector in the lead up to the EU Referendum vote this year.
Pre-referendum, CIEEM released a position statement highlighting the benefits of EU legislation in protecting our wildlife and habitats, the rigorous standards of pollution control, and how Brexit could impact sectors such as engineering, construction and housing.
Following the Brexit result, CIEEM has released a second position statement. Their view advocates short-term enabling legislation – that will ensure current EU laws are still upheld – avoiding uncertainty that could affect industry and investment. Long-term, they envisage an opportunity for the UK nations to draft ambitious and progressive visions for the natural environment, which will guide the review and improvement of environmental legislation for the benefit nature and society.
A clear understanding of the UK’s trading relationship with the EU, prior to actually leaving, will be required in order to implement enabling legislation to protect the UK’s natural environment.
Extensive information can be found on the CIEEM website, where you can access their recently released position statement as well as up to date information on with their involvement in offering their expertise and advice to relevant stakeholders: www.cieem.net/eu-referendum
