Introduction

Exploring best environmental practice for the UK post the EU Referendum.

Following the result of the EU referendum in June, for the UK to leave the European Union, the Society for the Environment is working with its partners and network of over 7000 Chartered Environmentalists and Registered Environmental Technicians to help ensure that the UK maintains, enhances and continues to play a leading role in best environmental management and practice, both in the UK and internationally.

In early October, we heard from the Conservative Party Conference that the UK will adopt all the existing EU environmental policies, ensuring short term continuity; but what does this mean for the long term?

The Society is taking a leadership position on this and is exploring this question with a range of stakeholders, through a number of activities including expert panel debates, surveys of chartered environmental professionals and collaboration with our professional body partners and Honorary Fellows.  We will also strengthen relationships with our international partners, such as ENEP, who facilitate cross boarder collaboration on environmental and sustainability practices.
SocEnv wants to ensure environmental voices are heard and that key shared messages are conveyed to the relevant policy and decision makers.  By harnessing the experience and knowledge of those at the sharp end of policy implementation across a multitude of sectors, we intend to identify what areas of existing or future policy that absolutely need to remain or be adopted to ensure the mitigation of environmental harm.  We will explore how we can reduce bureaucracy and complexity to enable better environmental outcomes; investigating underlying principles that can be embedded across legislation to ensure environmental protection and better compliance.

Our research will be used to inform a report to be launched in spring 2017 entitled ‘Our vision for Excellent Environmental Policy & Practice’.  It is our intention that this report becomes a go-to reference tool of widely supported recommendations and practical examples, providing invaluable insight for those tasked with reviewing future environmental policy and regulation.  We will champion this report through our professional networks, drawing out supported priorities to be communicated to Government to ensure that UK environmental policy and practice maintains its integrity and leadership position on the world stage, whatever the nature of our future relationship with the EU.

Environmental Professionals Survey

Prior to the referendum, we conducted a survey with ENDs. The survey looked at the attitudes of environmental professionals towards the EU and their voting intentions.

The report can be found here.

Thought Leaderships

We have hosted and sponsored a number of events with the intention of gaining credible insight into the implications of Brexit and how to proceed forward, in terms of influencing and maintaining best practice, during the negotiation process and beyond. These events were:

People, Politics, Planet: Any Questions? (21/07/16)
(Listen Again)

Brexit: What does it mean for the Environment? (26/09/16)
(Listen Again)

SocEnv responses to Government Inquiries

The Society has worked alongside its partners to collect evidence and insight into some of the effects of leaving the EU and present it to Government. Our responses to these inquiries have been designed to present our collective knowledge and amplify the messages of others.

The responses were:

Leaving the EU: implications and opportunities for Science and Research
(Science and Technology Committee inquiry)

 SocEnv Letters to Parliamentarians

Following Theresa May's ascension to Prime Minister and the subsequent cabinet reshuffle, we wrote to all Ministers and Secretaries of state with an environmental brief. These letters outlined a framework of what SocEnv believes to be essential in pursuing the best approach to protecting the environment outside of the European Union. We also used this opportunity to highlight the value of environmental professionals and extend the offer of assistance in connecting Ministers and departments with experts in the related fields.

You can find the framework here.
