Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP): A Landmark New Registration

A Landmark New Registration Offers More Environmental Professionals the Opportunity to Showcase their Proven Expertise and Commitment

The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) are delighted to announce the launch of a landmark new registration, the  Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) registration, a huge step forward to ensure high standards of professionalism and proven competence are met by those working to enhance and protect the environment across every sector.

Dr Emma Wilcox, Chief Executive of SocEnv, says: “The launch of REnvP is a landmark moment for environmental professionalism, providing more individuals with the opportunity to gain professional registration and achieve external verification of their competence.

REnvP registrants are recognised by their peers to have met a high standard of professionalism in their environmental work. By signing up to a code of professional conduct, Registered Environmental Practitioners demonstrate competence to implement good practice, make informed decisions and co-ordinate projects.”

As with the Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech) professional registrations, SocEnv licences professional bodies to award the new REnvP registration directly to their members. The environment can be the core part of a REnvP’s role, or they can specialise in environmental work as, for example, an engineer or a construction manager.

The first successful REnvP applicants join a community of over 7,500 CEnv and REnvTech professionals from across sectors and continents.

To date, seven professional bodies across a variety of sectors have been granted a licence to award REnvP to their members:

• Arboricultural Association
• Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA)
• Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3)
• Institute of Water
• Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE)
• Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES)
• Society of Operations Engineers (SOE)

The competence requirements for achieving REnvP mean that the registration sits directly in between the environmental technician registration, REnvTech, and Chartership level, CEnv. REnvP may therefore be considered an end goal in itself, and for others, a steppingstone to CEnv.

The REnvP registration’s direct link to the Environmental Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship, the very first degree apprenticeship for the environmental profession, is also transformative, with graduates ideally placed to achieve REnvP due to the practical experience and relevant knowledge obtained during their apprenticeship.

Rick Butler CEnv, Head of Technical and Professional Development at Anglian Water, explains why the introduction of REnvP is beneficial for employers:

“Anglian Water has a range of ambitious environmental goals around climate change, natural habitat and biodiversity conservation and pollution prevention as well as a commitment to reach net zero carbon by 2030. To meet these objectives, we need employees in roles who can demonstrate their commitment and professionalism to sustainable environmental outcomes. The new REnvP registration will help individuals at Anglian Water demonstrate how their daily work is key to helping us to achieve these stretching challenges”.

REnvP will also benefit wider society in our efforts to tackle the Climate Emergency. As noted by Martin Baxter CEnv, Chief Policy Advisor at the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and Board Member at SocEnv:

“Translating policy and regulation into real-world change is critical in making the transition to a sustainable future. Gaining Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) status demonstrates an individual’s skills and capability in the field of environmental protection and improvement. REnvP registrants will play a key role in implementing transformative actions to tackle significant challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and air pollution.”

Aspiring REnvP registrants are now invited to apply. Successful applicants stand to become one of the very first to achieve REnvP, enhancing their CV and setting an example for others to be inspired by. Those who apply before 31st March 2021 may be eligible for a reduced initial registration fee*.
